There would be nothing but plain, wooden beams in the rough shape of a house, and you wouldn't be able to live in it yet, but it would give an approximation of what the house would eventually look like.

You can think of HTML as that frame for a webpage. What are HTML elements? Like the frame of a house might be composed of individual pieces of wood, an HTML document is composed of individual HTML elements. <p>This is an element</p> Each HTML element is made up of tags, which for this element are the <p> and </p> symbols you see on either side. The tags in the image below specify that the text inside is a paragraph, which lets your browser know how to display it.

Try this! Consider a few paragraph elements together. Nested elements. Home - Mahara ePortfolio System. Create a unique and beautiful blog. It’s easy and free. Learning in the Bauhaus School: five lessons for today’s designers (and five ways the web still is… Five lessons the Bauhaus School can offer today’s designers 1. Go back to basics One of the great insights of the Bauhaus movement is to recognise that creative education is about more than passing on and refining technical knowledge or skills. Google is full of brilliant answers to every “how to” query. Watching fantastic online content like Aaron Draplin’s logo design challenge gives us great insight into the design process, and inspires us to try for ourselves. But when it comes to solving our own design problems, we need more than a how-to guide.

By going back to the fundamentals of colour, form, and meaning in design, we connect with the basic elements of our craft, and free ourselves to be more inventive and to respond authentically to the design problem that we are called to solve. 2. “Form follows function” is now an article of faith for designers, but that wasn’t always the case. This meant stripping away the intricate and floral decorations of the late nineteenth century. 3. 4. Master the Metaphor: Using Metaphors in Design. They may seem more appropriate for English majors and copywriters, but metaphors can be powerful solutions for visual problems, as well. Here’s why—and how—to use them effectively in all of your design projects. As consumers, we like to think we choose products based on what we can see, hear, feel, taste and touch about them. Is this a good hamburger? Let’s taste it. Is this a good car? Let’s drive it. In other words, we make our judgments via tangible distinctions.

For instance, even though that car can be seen and felt and driven, there are other aspects that determine how we relate to the vehicle, such as feelings of power or freedom or security. And that’s where metaphor comes into play. How Metaphors Work A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a comparison is made between dissimilar things. Pure metaphor. Another pure metaphor that invites me to leap—this time from color to music—is Stefan Sagmeister’s packaging for a Pat Metheny Trio CD. Fused metaphor. How to Fuse. The Principles of Beautiful Web Design. This article was written in 2007 and remains one of our most popular posts. For many web developers, myself included, the most intimidating part of the design process is getting started.

Imagine for a moment that you’re sitting at your desk with nothing other than a cup of coffee and the business card of a potential client who needs a basic corporate web site. Usually, a business card speaks volumes about a company’s identity, and could be used as design inspiration. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with the card for Smith Services in Figure 1.1. Figure 1.1: A bland client business card Anyone, no matter what level of artistic talent he or she has, can come up with a design that works well and looks good–all it takes is a little experience and a working knowledge of some basic layout principles. Since hanging up my design boots and focusing on being CEO of Envato, my focus has shifted from visual trends, to industry and technology ones. First, we’re about to see a pretty decent set of 3D/2D compositing tools come out of Adobe in the form of Project Felix (alpha).

For browser-based web design, we’ve got WebGL for serious applications, and CSS 3D Transformations for neat tricks. And finally, there is of course VR/AR interfaces on their way. It’s never been a better time to start scrubbing up your 3D skills. Lots of tools, more market consolidation We’re in a golden era of tools for designers with new products coming out every month. Technically speaking, I’m a writer. I get paid to write words. But here’s something most people don’t know about me: I hate to read. Now don’t get me wrong—I still read quite a bit. I wade my way through books and blogs, news feeds and magazines.

As a kid, I always thought my aversion to reading was a weakness. You see, I mostly write interface text for apps and websites. People don’t read your interface Numerous studies have shown how people don’t read on the web. Are people lazy? Because of that, you shouldn’t just write words and paste them into your design. To put it another way: You shouldn’t design with lorem ipsum. 7 tips for designing with words As an interface writer, I’ve learned a few things that can make your words a little easier to read. 1.

The most important thing you can do to help people read is to shorten your text. As a writer, I know how tempting it is to stretch your ideas and flex those writing muscles, but an interface isn’t the right place for that. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. If you have better examples than I’m using, please include them as well, but give me enough information about them, including links or cites, that I can make use of them. This revision features new examples and discussion involving mobile, wearables, and Internet-connected smart devices. However, the naming and organization remains the same except for three changes: I have shortened the name of one principle to extend its reach: “Color Blindness” is now simply Color and includes more than just color blindness. Use a single word space between sentences. “In the nineteenth century, which was a dark and inflationary age in typography and type design, many compositors were encouraged to stuff extra space between sentences.

Generations of twentieth century typists were then taught to do the same, by hitting the spacebar twice after every period [full stop]. Your typing as well as your typesetting will benefit from unlearning this quaint Victorian habit. As a general rule, no more than a single space is required after a period, colon or any other mark of punctuation.”

All white space in HTML, in any combination of spaces, tabs or line breaks, is automatically collapsed to a single word space. Therefore this guideline is automatically adhered to regardless of your training as a typist. If you do need to insert more than a single word space between sentences, or any other characters, then use one of the many space characters available in Unicode. Your Body Text Is Too Small – Medium. Optimizing Bigger Body Text When designing body text for websites, it’s important to realize there is no one-size-fits-all, because it all depends on factors such as the typeface design, the background/foreground color, and viewport dimensions. 1. Design The Body Text First Above all, when designing a web page we should design the body text first, usually before anything else in the layout.

It’s the most common element and its appearance will have an evident effect on the rest of the composition. This is particularly true with bigger body text since it takes up more space. 2. As a general principal in typography, it’s usually better to stick with a serif or sans-serif font for body text. Text typefaces are purposefully designed and optimized to work well between 6–14 points (8–18px), but because of their increased inter-character spacing, heavier contrasting and lowercase x-height, might seem unappealing at 24-26px. 3. 4. 5. If CPL is important to bigger body text, so is line height. How to design words – Medium. 5 Actual Web Designs Trends for 2016 — Apegroup — Behind the Screens.
