Wind Map. An invisible, ancient source of energy surrounds us—energy that powered the first explorations of the world, and that may be a key to the future.

Wind Map

This map shows you the delicate tracery of wind flowing over the US. The wind map is a personal art project, not associated with any company. We've done our best to make this as accurate as possible, but can't make any guarantees about the correctness of the data or our software. Please do not use the map or its data to fly a plane, sail a boat, or fight wildfires :-) If the map is missing or seems slow, we recommend the latest Chrome browser. Surface wind data comes from the National Digital Forecast Database. If you're looking for a weather map, or just want more detail on the weather today, see these more traditional maps of temperature and wind.

From Tiny to Tinier: One GIF Zooms in on Bacterial Life. Future of Space Exploration: Armies of Info-Gathering Bots.

The way we explore space is set to change drastically in the near future, according to Wolfgang Fink, associate in physics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Future of Space Exploration: Armies of Info-Gathering Bots

While we currently rely on single single-spacecraft missions that are commanded from Earth, we will soon see virtual armies of cheap, expendable space robots deployed to other heavenly bodies. They’ll be able to command themselves and other robots, making them a cohesive yet independent unit of exploration. Fink’s vision centers on an exploratory trip to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. He sees sending a group of rovers, lake landers and an airship that will float above the moon. The land-based robots could direct the airship to fly over areas that they can’t access, and the airship could instruct the land and lake bots to get a closer look at areas of interest it spies from above. Today, space missions rely on Earth-based orders. Humorous Photos. David Gallo shows underwater astonishments.
