Help. Cool stuff. 23 Practical Things You Can Do to Make Your Life More Fulfilling. How can we live a more fulfilling life? While there are things we can do which are more long-term in nature (such as the ones in 37 Lessons to Help You Live a Life that Matters), here I’d like to focus on practical things which we can do today. As I wrote in my post about being indispensable, human needs can be classified into eight levels in the Maslow hierarchy.

The eight levels from the lowest to the highest are physical, security, belonging, esteem, learning, aesthetic, self-actualization, and transcendence. The lower levels comprise of basic needs which are essential to live. But to live a fulfilling life, I believe that the key is on the higher levels. The more your needs at the higher levels are met, the more fulfilling your life will be. Money for example, mainly meets your need at the physical or at most esteem level. So here are 23 practical things you can do to make your life more fulfilling: If you liked this post, please give it a thumb up in StumbleUpon. Best Classic Books to Read. Reading classic books can boost your learning experience. There are some reasons why classic books can do that: they have stood the test of time, they give you different “lenses” to look through, and they will most likely be relevant even to the far future.

Reading the classics is an excellent intellectual exercise which will arm you with a lot of powerful intellectual tools. To find good classic books, there are trusted recommendations that can help us. The recommendations are found in the books How to Read a Book by Mortimer J. While I believe a book which is recommended by any of them is good, I think it’s safe to say that a book which is recommended by both of them is great. So without further ado, here are the recommended classic books along with the Amazon and free download links (if any): Novel Autobiography and Memoir History Drama Poet. How to Read Classic Books Effectively. A few weeks ago I wrote a post entitled 48 Classic Books to Boost Your Learning Experience. It lists 48 classic books which are mentioned by both How to Read a Book (by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles van Doren) and The Well-Educated Mind (by Susan Wise Bauer).

I believe the 48 books are great books which will boost our learning experience. The next question, after knowing what to read, is how we should read them. Since I’m just a beginner in the world of classic books, that is something I would like to know myself. One book which has very good tips on reading classic books is The Well-Educated Mind by Susan Wise Bauer (which I mentioned above). All right, let’s start. Grammar stage(“Grammar” here means the building blocks, the foundational knowledge of each academic subject) In this stage, we just absorb information without evaluating it. When we read classic books, we should follow these three stages. Here are some specific tips on how to do these three stages of reading: 1. 2. 3. In the northeast corner of 101st Street and Princeton Avenue, a peeling sign lists activities forbidden by the 100th South Princeton Block Club: loitering, drug dealing, loud music. When Edith Howard moved from the projects to this block of brick bungalows in 1964, the neighborhood—Roseland—seemed a promising place to give her growing family a better life. But the Roseland of today is much changed: The block club hasn’t been active for years, and drug and gang activity is common. What’s more, Roseland lacks many of the basic resources that stabilize a neighborhood, including a good place to buy food. For groceries, Howard, 78, relies on her daughter to drive her the two and a half miles up to Chatham or down to the border of Morgan Park.

“I used to shop in Roseland, but I never go over there now,” Howard says of the string of sneaker shops and discount clothing stores on Michigan Avenue. The University Record, May 22, 2000 Practice five key concepts to improve your EQ By Britt Halvorson Do you have a high EQ? EQ has nothing to do with knowledge of start-up Internet companies or the functions of e-mail, but everything to do with your understanding of emotions. Emotional intelligence (EQ) was the focus of a Workplace 2000 program led by Janell Kilgore, a staff counselor in the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. People often feel uncomfortable when discussing their feelings because they think negatively of expressing emotions or see them as problematic, especially in the workplace, Kilgore commented. “IQ is not the determining factor for success,” Kilgore said. According to Kilgore, understanding and practicing five key concepts can improve your emotional intelligence. Knowing one’s own emotions Recognize and name emotions you feel; understand why you feel that way; and distinguish between feelings and actions.

The Flesch–Kincaid readability tests are readability tests designed to indicate how difficult a passage in English is to understand. There are two tests, the Flesch Reading Ease, and the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level. Although they use the same core measures (word length and sentence length), they have different weighting factors. The results of the two tests correlate approximately inversely: a text with a comparatively high score on the Reading Ease test should have a lower score on the Grade-Level test. Rudolf Flesch devised the Reading Ease evaluation; somewhat later, he and J.

Peter Kincaid developed the Grade Level evaluation for the United States Navy. History[edit] "The Flesch–Kincaid" (F–K) reading grade level was developed under contract to the U.S. The F–K formula was first used by the Army for assessing the difficulty of technical manuals in 1978 and soon after became a United States Military Standard. When I moved into this neighborhood, I fell in love right away.

Not with the actual neighborhood, but with its potential: It's affordable, there are nice row houses all around just waiting to be filled up by my friends, there's lot of open space to be exploited, and plenty of parking. Plus, this area has got a great authentic feel and, with a little work, it could be even more authentic. Perfect, right? So why am I the only one doing anything about it? I am always telling my other struggling artist, freelance graphic designer, and independent T-shirt-maker friends that this is the neighborhood to take it to.

It's frustrating, though. The problem is that the property owners here are clueless. Do any of these people appreciate what the neighborhood they're living in could be? I'm trying to convince the owners of that taqueria on the corner to change their décor to incorporate some more of that funky Day Of The Dead motif I really like.

The Save Carney Neighborhood Foundation, the most organized non-criminal group in this part of town, has filed a lawsuit in federal court to block the scheduled April 2008 groundbreaking. While halting the project would surely prevent a tragic urban-planning nightmare, it would also mean keeping the run-down, economically depressed community exactly as it is.

"Carney is where I was born and raised, and it remains a tight-knit community," said Foundation chairman Althea Hynes at a fundraising block party held Monday on a broken bottle- and condom-strewn stretch of Carney Avenue where the money-grubbing Messner wants to put a soulless indoor food court.
