The popularity of such courses, which are typically free, is rising steadily. Research published last month by the Higher Education Academy has presented insights into why learners choose to study using Moocs and what key aspects need to be addressed when designing the courses.
Launching the study, Alison Le Cornu, consultant in academic practice at the HEA, said that although Moocs were “increasingly popular…as change and innovation occurs, it is important not to lose sight of the learner”. About EMMA EMMA will provide a system for the delivery of free, open, online courses in multiple languages from different European universities to help preserve Europe’s rich cultural, educational and linguistic heritage and to promote real cross-cultural and multi-lingual learning.
The EMMA team are taking a deliberate multi-lingual, multi-cultural approach to learning by offering inbuilt translation and transcription services for courses hosted on the platform. EMMA is a 30 month pilot action supported by the European Union. The website will aggregate and host courses provided by European universities who wish to provide their courses in multiple languages. Secondly, the platform will allow users create their own learning paths by bringing together various units from different MOOCs.

Massive Open Online Courses landed in the UK today with the launch of FutureLearn, a project led by the Open University and including around 20 universities from the UK, Monash University in Australia, Trinity College Dublin as well as organisations such as the British Council and the British Museum. Chief executive Simon Nelson said this morning that more than 20,000 people had signed up for the eight courses available in the past 24 hours. Each course is between four and eight weeks long and involves a few hours of study a week.
