MOOCs as a Worldwide Neocolonial Force: A Reflection on MIT’s Learning International Networks Consortium (LINC) Conference

Our goal in creating the tool was to address concerns several instructors brought to our attention related to the difficult task they had in composing effective feedback messages related to course performance for students based on best practices.1 The research we found was extremely specific in helping us come up with criteria that were most likely to motivate students. Some words worked better than others and writing shorter messages increased the chances students would read them.2 Comments that did not provide specific resources were less effective.3 As we investigated the research, a pattern for success became more clear. We followed this pattern in the construction of our library. Another concern we have looked to address was to try to provide a library that would inspire individual responses as much as possible.

The course will introduce you to the technology that converts solar energy into electricity, heat and solar fuels with a main focus on electricity generation. Photovoltaic (PV) devices are presented as advanced semiconductor devices that deliver electricity directly from sunlight.

The emphasis is on understanding the working principle of a solar cell, fabrication of solar cells, PV module construction and the design of a PV system. You will understand the principles of the photovoltaic conversion (the conversion of light into electricity). You will learn about the advantages, limitations and challenges of different solar cell technologies, such as crystalline silicon solar cell technology, thin film solar cell technologies and the latest novel solar cell concepts as studied on lab-scale.

After completion of the course, you will be able to: d) analyze the performance of solar cells and modules Nothing! Course: B01-Mathematics. About the Course This course is about demystifying research and research methods.

Understanding Research Methods

It will outline the fundamentals of doing research, aimed primarily, but not exclusively, at the postgraduate level. It places the student experience at the centre of our endeavours by engaging learners in a range of robust and challenging discussions and exercises befitting SOAS, University of London's status as a research-intensive university and its rich research heritage.

This course will appeal to those of you who require an understanding of research approaches and skills, and importantly an ability to deploy them in your studies or in your professional lives. In particular, this course will aid those of you who have to conduct research as part of your postgraduate studies but do not perhaps have access to research methods courses, or for those of you who feel you would like additional support for self-improvement. This growing population is putting pressure on food, water and energy supplies, threatening biodiversity, and contributing to global climate change. We need find a way to meet these challenges while maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment. We believe that the oceans hold the key to overcoming these challenges. In this 8-week course we will look at: The significant challenges facing humanity now and in the futureIdentifying the bottle-necks behind these challengesHow ocean-based solutions will help to meet the growing demands for resourcesHow ocean-based solutions can be used in climate change mitigation strategiesThe historical impact of ocean governance on implementing effective solutionsThe impacts of public perception and attitudes in implementing ocean solution strategies and consider the practicality of successfully deploying them We hope you can join us.
