Turk's Cap, a nice bloomer for the hot summer

The bright-red flower of Turk’s cap, however, is not the regular “mallow-like” open five-petal bloom. Turk’s cap continues to flower through the summer heat and on into the fall, and it is fairly drought-resistant. It has been used as a garden plant for a long time and so is generally available at local nurseries. Turk’s cap in bloom. (photo by Bill Ward). Deciding Where to Locate Your Bee Hives. You can keep bees just about anywhere: in the countryside, in the city, in a corner of the garden, by the back door, in a field, on the terrace, or even on a rooftop downtown.

Deciding Where to Locate Your Bee Hives

You don't need a great deal of space, nor do you need to have flowers on your property. Bees will happily travel for miles to forage for what they need. These girls are amazingly adaptable, but you'll get optimum results and a more rewarding honey harvest if you follow some basic guidelines (see Figure 1). Figure 1: The picture-perfect beeyard. Basically, you're looking for easy access (so you can tend to your hives), good drainage (so the bees don't get wet), a nearby water source for the bees, dappled sunlight, and minimal wind. My Hive Setup Part 2: Bottom Board and Hive Top Feeder Setup

I like the free shipping from Mann Lake and their discounts for large orders. That free shipping comes in very handy when I am buying hundreds of honey super frames in the spring! But I really like Brushy’s inner cover for its construction and inclusion of a notch for a top entrance/ventilation. I haven’t used these yet to see how popular the top entrance is for the bees but I am hopeful. Gleanings in Bee Culture. Anr.ext.wvu.edu/r/download/37600. It is a book for intended beginners and contains dozens of meticulously drawn diagrams which detail, step by step, various beekeeping operations. New method of using lemongrass oil as swarm lure. Just wanted to share an idea that seems to be working for me here in Louisiana. as we all have read lemongrass oil is great for a swarm lure, but if the trap is in place for a long time the smell can dwindle down to nothing.the bee supply companies are using a small palstic vial for their swarm lure but finding the vials to use with lemongrass oil is not easy!

new method of using lemongrass oil as swarm lure

I haven't found them yet! What i have done is take a lab quality pipette ( all plastic) and used it as the vial for the lemongrass oil swarm lure. the pipette has a large bulb on the end which i cut off, i then reseal the end using a hemostat to clamp the end and a soldering iron as a heat source to melt and seal the end.i then take the pipette and draw up the lemongrass oil into it. i make sure the oil all goes down to the newly sealed botton and then i set it upright for a while to allow all the oil on the sides to run down to the bottom. ( i set it into a piece of old junk comb and this holds it fine )

Swarm Lure. Our swarm lures are NOT just lemongrass oil in a vial.

Swarm Lure

Though lemongrass oil CAN be used to bait a hive, the results will never be as rewarding if you used a true swarm lure. Recipe for Swarm Lure. Those bee colonies that swarm are strong, and I want strong bees.

Recipe for Swarm Lure

I hated that one of my hives died last year…the hive that died was always kind of slow compared to the Amazons (which I got as a result of a swarm from Chris’s hive). It makes sense that it you’ve got strong colonies, you’d want to propogate them. And there are several ways to do that, though I haven’t done it yet. Here is a list of garden plants for bees that provide forage for at least one species of bee. Many of these plants will attract honey bees and different types of bumblebees and solitary bees. Most people can accomodate at least a few of these flowers to attract bees and butterflies into their gardens, even if only in pots.

At the bottom of this page you'll find links to further lists of plants for bees, including wildflowers, trees, hedgerows, shrubs, herbs, and fruit and vegetables - many of which make great bee plants as well as putting food on our plates! Please note also that some of these plants appear on other bee plant lists on this site, because some species arguably straddle more than one category (e.g. cornflowers and foxgloves may also be categorized as wildflowers). When selecting plants, traditional variaties are best, rather than the highly cultivated, extra-frilly types. Www.cals.ncsu.edu/entomology/apiculture/pdfs/2.16 copy.pdf.

David Croteau's Warré hive modifications David Croteau, Skowhegan, Maine USA has made some important modifications to the Warré hive and posted photos of them on the web site of the Yahoo e-group. Instead of Warré's floor, Croteau places the hive on an empty box the same size as a Warré box. This bottom box rests in turn directly on a concrete slab. Croteau calls the bottom box a 'sump'. Hive-body boxes above this sump have entrances cut in them comprising 41 mm diameter circular holes near the bottom of the front. It is worth noting that the Palteau hive (1756), the first wooden hive on the same principle as Warré's, had an entrance in each hive body box, all but the lowest remaining open.
