Tona Brown to be first trans woman of color performing at Carnegie Hall. Earlier this year, we wrote to all of you asking to help Tona Brown, a transgender violinist and mezzo-soprano, fund her performance at Carnegie Hall.
We are proud to say that Brown will officially be making history as the first openly transgender woman of color to perform at the iconic venue on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at 7:30PM. She has lauched phase two of fundraising for the event with a GoFundMe campaign, which you can support here. Her performance will feature music from her debut album, "This Is Who I Am," which will include African American Art Songs and spirituals. She describes her upcoming performance to The Huffington Post: The concert is called 'From Stonewall to Carnegie Hall' because we want to educate people about the plight of LGBT Americans, from 1969 to the present, through music and speech. Brown also performed last night at TrevorLive, a comedy and music event hosted by The Trevor Project, which raised funds and awareness for youth suicide prevention.

Filmmaker Lilly Wachowski made her first public appearance at the GLAAD Media Awards last night, where she accepted the award for best drama series for her Netflix show ‘Sense8’.
Taking to the stage, Lilly spoke about her own coming out and the role the GLAAD has in the wider LGBT+ community. She thanked the ‘fabulous people at GLAAD’ for their help, ‘as well as the extremely sensitive and courteous people at the Daily Mail. Thanks guys,’ she added with sarcasm that drew laughter from the crowd. Lilly came out as transgender last month in a public statement published through Chicago’s Windy City Times following threats from a journalist from the British publication The Daily Mail who was going to publicly out her if she did not share her story with them. On stage she said, ‘My sister likes to joke, you can’t write this shit. ‘And while the ideas of identity and transformation are components of our work, the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love. The dark side of “visibility”: How we slept on trans people becoming the new scapegoats of the right.
I was happy to hear about the International Trans Day of Visibility two years ago.
I agreed with the sentiment that the Transgender Day of Remembrance in November being the only trans holiday was morbid and depressing and that celebrating happy, healthy trans lives was a positive goal. I was happy to be one of many allies pushing awareness of March 31 as a “day of visibility” last year. Which is why I was surprised when one of my close friends, who is trans and who hadn’t heard of the holiday, responded with a scowl when I told her about it. 16 Questions You've Always Wanted to Ask a Trans Man, Answered by a Trans Man.
