The Marais is one of Paris’ oldest and most dazzling quarters. First developed in the 12th century, the Marais, which means "swamp" and once was one, went from being a royal favorite under Henri IV and Louis XIII, to falling into ruin after the Revolution of 1789. Since its revival in the 1960's, it has shone as a center of Parisian artistic and cultural life. The Marais is one of the only areas that preserves the narrow streets and architectural styles of Medieval and Renaissance-era Paris. Most of Paris was overhauled in the mid-19th century under the direction of Napoleon III and architect Baron Georges Eugène Haussmann. The wide, sweeping boulevards and grey, classical-inspired apartments that characterize places like the Champs-Elysées and Montparnasse are the work of Haussmann, who also modernized Paris by installing sewer and water systems. http://goparis.about.com/od/sightsattractions/ss/MaraisTour.htm

http://www.designsoak.com/stockholm-subway-art/ The Stockholm County Metro Subway in Sweden is quite an architectural marvel; I think you’ll agree. The subway system has 100 uniquely-designed stations, with 47 underground and 53 above ground level. After occasionally traveling on the boring, non-decorated London Tube, I can attest to how much I admire this stunning architecture. From painted tunnels, rainbows, red walls and mood-lit spaces, this “subway art” is simply astonishing…

Not so fast. That’s not the Mekong River or Chao Phraya River past the trees. It’s the Hillsborough River in Florida. If you hopped on a boat and floated downstream, you’d soon end up in Tampa Bay. Last year I wrote a post called Stuck at home? http://travel.booklocker.com/page/4/

At a rest stop en route to the Pacific coast, we observed people pointing at the branches of a huge shade tree. A glance upward revealed a family of macaws, the colorful bird pictured here.

My 13 Most Wanted Destinations

I do not have a bucket list. If I did, I’m sure most of the things on that list would have been crossed off by now. That does not mean, however, that I do not have goals or a priority list of things I’d like to do. The following list is of the 13 places I would most like to visit. You will notice that most of these destinations are out of the way and rather hard to get to.
Cusco was one of the highlights of my three months in Ecuador and Peru , but it took me a few days to ferret out the best things to see and do, as well as the best places to stay and eat, so I wanted to share what I discovered to help others who may be planning to travel to Cusco and visit the famed Machu Picchu Incan Ruins . Inkaterra La Casona is located in a colonial manor house that was one of the first Spanish constructions in the original Inca settlement and was at one time occupied by the conquistadors of Peru and their descendants. It is comprised of eleven suites surrounding a serene courtyard, just a short stroll from Plaza de Armas, Cusco’s present-day main square. From it’s luxuriously appointed common areas, which are furnished with overstuffed sofas and chairs, to its fabulous gourmet breakfast buffet, to its exquisitely appointed rooms, La Casona offers the top of the line in luxury.

Before you say anything about the content of this article, I hate people who litter. I’ll judge you if I think you’re too lazy to recycle. I hate pollution and the death of our fragile ecosystems and all the rest. But- with that disclaimer out of the way- Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, California is the incredible result of human wastefulness and the resilience of nature.

Budget Europe Travel Hop on Hop off Travel in Europe for Independent Travellers

One of Europe’s most beautiful and historic cities right up there with Venice and Paris. But add funky and mellow bars, pervasive irreverence, whiffs of pot, sleaze and sex and you have a literally intoxicating mix. A port town through and through, the town does have a fascinating history, a handful of sights to warrant an extra day or two, and the downtown area is very pedestrian friendly. This graceful city is the belle of Provence’s ball. Famed for its annual performing-arts festival and its fabled bridge, Avignon is an ideal spot from which to step out into the surrounding region. A forward-thinking place, on the cutting edge of art, design and cuisine but with an equally rich past stretching back to Roman days. http://www.busabout.com/hop-on-hop-off/flexitrip
This is the first installment in a series for my 4th Travelversay Celebration . I have no idea how many cities I’ve been to during my travels, but if you just include cities where I’ve slept at least one night, it has to be in the hundreds. These cities have stuck out in my mind for some reason over the years. This is probably one of the hardest lists I had to compile because there were so many other cities that were worthy of mention. Noumea is easily the most beautiful city in the Pacific outside of New Zealand. It is almost like a city on the French Rivera which has been transported to the Pacific.
