This Saturday, Toby and I were riding the bus downtown, when a six-year-old girl sat down next to us.

She was wearing a white dress and sparkly red flats, and her blonde hair was twisted into a braid. My first instinct was to compliment her hairstyle, but I stopped myself... I had just read the GREAT article How to Talk to Little Girls by Lisa Bloom, which encourages adults to ask little girls about ideas and books, instead of complimenting their looks. "Teaching girls that their appearance is the first thing you notice tells them that looks are more important than anything," says Bloom. "I always bite my tongue when I meet little girls, restraining myself from my first impulse, which is to tell them how darn cute/ pretty/ beautiful/ well-dressed/ well-manicured/ well-coiffed they are...It's our culture's standard talking-to-little-girls icebreaker, isn't it? " (It's true! I was thrilled by our conversation! Lisa Bloom's advice to have real conversations with little girls (and boys!) "25 Things You Need to Stop Doing" by CH Staff (Page 5)

Nobody likes people who make hollow promises, especially when their bodies are anything but hollow. Do yourself a favor, the next time you're eating a pizza and your friend complains about how out of shape they are, grab the pizza and run. You'll lose both an unwanted friend and a couple of pounds. Win / Win! Granted there are definitely some movies and shows that everyone NEEDS to see, we understand that, but ridiculing someone for not having seen them is not the way to go about it.

Harry Belafonte Calls Out Jay-Z and Beyonce for Selfishness. By Dr. Boyce Watkins, KultureKritic.com Harry Belafonte, who did a great deal of work for the black community during the Civil Rights Movement, is making no secret of the fact that he’s very disappointed in many young black celebrities when it comes to to social activism. Speaking this week with the Hollywood Reporter, Belafonte pointed out Jay-Z and Beyonce as prime examples of what he’s talking about.

THR: Back to the occasion of the award for your acting career. Are you happy with the image of members of minorities in Hollywood today? Belafonte: Not at all. My friend Alexis Stodghill at TheGrio makes the point (in a news piece where she carefully cites both sides of the issue) that perhaps Belafonte is off-base with his critique. We must note that Beyonce and Jay-Z speaking up on gay marriage and homosexuality is little more than a political decision designed to remain in alignment with the Obama presidency. Those days are long gone. Way to go Harry, I respect you. Dr. Dont Talk to Police. The answer might surprise you: Why is the sky dark at night? [VIDEO] NASA's Voyager 1 set to leave solar system, 11 billion miles away. NASA's Voyager 1 has reached the edge of our solar system and its is flying out into interstellar space. The craft built by NASA and launched in 1977, traveling at 17 km/second is now 17,970,000,000km or 11,100,000,000 miles away from the Earth.

Reuters reports that with Voyager 1 space probe at the edge of the solar system, it has successfully extended its record as the most distant man-made object in space. The Atlantic reports that the spacecraft's cameras were turned off in 1990 after it took pictures that some described as a "Family Portrait" consisting of planets as they appear from Voyager 1's perspective looking back over the solar system as it traveled beyond. According to Reuters, signals from the space probe received last week indicate that the craft is at the edge of the heliosphere, poised to leave the solar system and voyage into interstellar space. StoryBoardC - Hermes Sac à dépêches... Or today better known as The Kelly Bag. Since Sunday I shared my most recent Handbag purchase and mentioned in my Page "The Kelly" once again. I thought it was high time to do a tribute. Hermes first created Sac à dépêches in 1892 as a large saddle carrier and then downsized it in the 1930's for chic women's daywear.

It had a quiet high-end parisian following for many years before Princess Grace of Monaco stepped out of her car on a visit to the US. Everyone who has hung in here with me in blog land. Kelly, Sr. Early life[edit] Kelly was one of 10 children born to John Henry Kelly, an Irish immigrant from Newport, County Mayo, Ireland who came to the United States in 1869, and his wife Mary Anne Costello, also a native of Ireland who arrived in the U.S. in 1867. In 1908, he began bricklaying in Philadelphia and he also learned to row on the Schuylkill River. By 1916, Kelly was a national champion and the best sculler in the United States when, as part of the World War I call up, Kelly joined United States Army as a private.

He rose to the rank of lieutenant when he was discharged in 1918. While in the army, he entered the armed forces boxing tournament as a heavyweight and ran up a 12-0 record before being waylaid by a broken ankle. Future World Professional Boxing Champion Gene Tunney won the tournament. In later years, Kelly would kid Tunney that: "Aren't you lucky I broke my ankle? " In 1919, Kelly played professional football for the Holmesburg Athletic Club. Kelly v. Family[edit] John B. Princess Caroline of Monaco Pic - Image of Princess Caroline of Monaco - AllStarPics.Net. The Symmetric Swan: The Rebel: Princess Stephanie Of Monaco.

Royal families are the movie stars of Europe and when I was little no one caught my attention quite like Princess Stephanie of Monaco, daughter of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly. In the mid to late eighties, we followed her scandals like we follow Lindsay's court dates. Granted, we would have been fascinated with Grace Kelly's youngest daughter, the one she referred to as her "Wild Child", regardless.

When Grace Kelly died in 1982, rumors and mystery persisted in the tabloids as to what exactly happened on that September day. One of those rumors being that young Stephanie had been driving among other rumors describing Princess Grace's mysterious headaches. I love these pictures of Stephanie and her mother. In a few short years, she went from the girl above to the girl below. Now, here is a guide on how to be the rebel princess of modern history. 1. Oh, the singing career. She also recorded "In the Closet" with Michael Jackson under the alias of Mystery Girl for his album, "Dangerous".

Flags By Colours. 131 - US States Renamed For Countries With Similar GDPs | Strange Maps. By Frank Jacobs Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a convenient way of measuring and comparing the size of national economies. Annual GDP represents the market value of all goods and services produced within a country in a year. Put differently: GDP = consumption + investment + government spending + (exports – imports) Although the economies of countries like China and India are growing at an incredible rate, the US remains the nation with the highest GDP in the world – and by far: US GDP is projected to be $13,22 trillion (or $13.220 billion) in 2007, according to this source. The creator of this map has had the interesting idea to break down that gigantic US GDP into the GDPs of individual states, and compare those to other countries’ GDP.

Pakistan, for example, has a GDP that’s slightly higher than Israel’s – but Pakistan has a population of about 170 million, while Israel is only 7 million people strong. This map was suggested by Morgan via strangemaps@gmail.com, and can be found here. EAT. LEARN. MOVE.
