Growing up in my house, we always made our own holiday gifts. We were pretty poor, and I suppose it was our only option. But it was never presented to me like that (I didn’t even know what ‘poor’ was, really, and I had a stupendously fabulous childhood full of ‘thing finding’ and ‘government cheese’. But that’s another story.) It was all about crafting our caring into something unique, something personal. My mom and I made play-doh ornaments, or baskets of baked goods, or clay coffee mugs.
We all have food traditions that are specific to our geographical location. I am a citizen of the Southeastern United States, and my residence is just outside the Great Smoky Mountains. I could tell you about a number of traditional and odd-sounding foodstuffs that I grew up on; eggs scrambled with crumbled cornbread, cushaw pie, chocolate grav y ... but this post is dedicated to a simple southern snack that I remember fondly: peanuts in Coca-Cola . When I was a kid I would ride to the gas station with my dad in his old beat-up work truck.

Have you seen this, my friends? It's a Rube Goldberg inspired wall in Germany that creates music when it rains, due to the mousetrap drain and gutter system with various sized metal cones. It's called the Funnel Wall at the Kunsthof-Passage in Neustadt.

I'm realizing just how much of a homebody I am. Maybe it's because going out seems like a lot of work these days. More likely it's that I just love the little home that our little house is shaping up to be and the little people (plus Daniel) that I share it with. I mean, I can spend a day at the zoo (like we did this past weekend), seeing rare and exotic animals from all corners of the globe, and come home with maybe 3 or 4 pics.

That's why it's so important to support the creative individuals that are helping us all by reusing this 'nearly impossible to kill' material - individuals like Camila Labra in Chile who's boots are mostly made from fused plastic bags .
