Her incredible Jupiter planet cake (seen above) was featured earlier this week on the highly influential I f*cking love science Facebook page (which boasts a staggering 6.3 million fans). The layer cake has since gone viral, with Rhiannon’s Earth cake (a commission) also making the rounds. She has now posted a detailed tutorial on her blog on how to make the deliciously cakes, which you can find at the links below: Spherical Concentric Layer Cake Tutorial. This tutorial will show you the most basic and least equipment-heavy way of baking the concentric layer cake as seen in both the Earth cake and Jupiter cake.
You can stop at half way and just make a hemisphere cake, or make two hemispheres and join them into one as in this video. How big you make the cake is up to you. For the Earth cake I baked the largest layer in a 2 litre pudding basin. As the Jupiter cake one was for a tute and not for a group of people, I only baked it as big as a 1 litre pudding bowl. There’s no other reason why I baked the sphere smaller – you can make it as big or small as you like. Let’s begin! And while today's new-age travellers appears to have taken the philosophy even further, preferring to use traditional horse-drawn caravans instead of gas-guzzling vans, they also appear to be embracing the modern technology like mobile phones, laptops and even Facebook. During the late 1980s and 1990s stories about the travellers were commonplace - illegal raves, clashes with the police, drug busts and fury at the criminal justice act. Photographer Iain McKell took his first pictures of new-age travellers 25 years ago.
And while little has been written about the New Age travellers in the past decade, the movement has far from fizzled out.
