Summer Garden Granny Square. I love making Granny Squares.

Summer Garden Granny Square

There's just something about creating little stacks of them that is hugely satisfying. They are versatile, and easy for beginners to learn because the basic stitches and method of working "in the round" are simple to get to grips with. It's how I first learnt to crochet 18 months ago, and I still get a huge amount of pleasure from making granny squares. This particular square, which I am calling my Summer Garden Granny Square, is my own pattern. It came about after I had an idea of making squares for a blanket, which when all assembled together would resemble a garden blooming with summer flowers. So :: For my blanket squares (pictured above) I'm using a DK weight pure wool, with a 4mm hook. I'm going to write the pattern in UK crochet terms where the main stitch is a UK Treble.

Stitches used are as follows: sl st (slip stitch) :: insert hook, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch, then through the loop on your hook. To Start :: How to turn a circle into granny square. I've done it before!

How to turn a circle into granny square

Take your circle, and don't finish off. Count how many stitches you have in total, and divide by 4. Mark the corners now, because you are going to be working your way to them. Let's say you have a circle that has 20 stitches all around. 20 divided by 4 = 5, so with a piece of contrasting yarn, mark each 5th stitch. Just tie the yarn around the stitch. What you are going to do now is to chain 1, single crochet in the same stitch. Can you see the corner being made? Single crochets half double crochet (in your marked stitch) double crochet, chain 2, double crochet (all in the same stitch) half double crochet single crochets Afterwards, how the granny is going to look is entirely up to you. NOTE: You might need to start your half double crochet a few stitches before instead of just 2.

Then print out our exclusive Crafty Crafty pattern and you'll be one step closer to Jolly Roger joy. Pattern after the jump This is a very straightforward pattern, using rows of Double Crochet (US Single Crochet), turning at each end to work forwards and backwards. Each square represents one DC (US sc). Materials: 2.5mm crochet hook (MM) Black and Red Mercerised cotton, using two strands of cotton for each for extra thickness. Notes: Chain 27 to begin. Chain one to turn - this counts as your first DC (US sc). Carry the colour not being used through the back of the mat. The pattern is slightly different to the finished mat - I thought the pattern needed a bit more bone on the bottom left side, and I also made the pattern square (not sure why I didn't think of that when I was making it!) Carina's Craftblog: Crochet magic ring tutorial

Ok, so there's a granny triangle tutorial in the works, but first I'm going to show you how to make a magic ring. This is a very handy thing to know how to make. Not just for granny triangles! Why is it handy? Because it can make centres of your work look a lot better. And despite its name, there is actually no magic involved whatsoever.
