Problems of the Month

A problem that you can’t solve in less than a day is usually a problem that is similar to one that you have solved before. But in real life, a problem is a situation that confronts you and you don’t have an idea of where to even start. If we want our students to be problem solvers and mathematically powerful, we must model perseverance and challenge students with non-routine problems. Administrators, teachers and parents should facilitate and support students in the process of attacking and reasoning about the problems. The solution is not as important as the process of problem solving. The educator or parent should not be impatient with the student’s struggle.

The principal should embrace the concept of problem solving and model problem-solving leadership, being a facilitator of non-routine problems. Once the problem is presented to the students, the principal should be visible in facilitating the tasks alongside the teachers. Math is Fun - Maths Resources. Welcome to Math Playground. Write the following questions on the chalkboard or overhead: I might make more money if I was in business for myself; should I quit my job?

The Game of SKUNK

An earthquake might destroy my house; should I buy insurance? My mathematics teacher might collect homework today; should I do it? Ask students to share their responses to each of these scenarios. Ask students why their responses may be different from their classmates. Every day each of us must make choices like those described above. Making the connection between choice and chance is basic to understanding the significance and usefulness of mathematical probability. The game of SKUNK presents middle-grade students with an experience that clearly involves both choice and chance. The Game of SKUNK To start the game each player makes a score sheet like this: Each letter of SKUNK represents a different round of the game; play begins with the "S" column and continue through the "K" column.

At the beginning of each round, every player stands. Reference. Virtual Nerd: Real math help for school and home. Home Page. Teachers Primary Pupils Secondary Students Events and PD "It gave me some good ideas to use in the classroom and ... a link that I can get all of the activities from.

" We provide teachers and students with mathematics relevant to our world today … Parabola. The parabola has many important applications, from a parabolic antenna or parabolic microphone to automobile headlight reflectors to the design of ballistic missiles.

Parabola

They are frequently used in physics, engineering, and many other areas. Strictly, the adjective parabolic should be applied only to things that are shaped as a parabola, which is a two-dimensional shape. However, as shown in the last paragraph, the same adjective is commonly used for three-dimensional objects, such as parabolic reflectors, which are really paraboloids. Sometimes, the noun parabola is also used to refer to these objects. Though not perfectly correct, this usage is generally understood.
