23 German Slang Words Your Textbook Isn't Teaching You. Think about all the English slang you use with friends on a daily basis. How many of these slang words do you think show up in basic English textbooks? Well, the German heard on the streets ain’t the stuffy language contained in your textbooks either. Sure, learning the rules of word order, proper pronunciation and compound nouns will help you get a good grasp on German. After you’ve been studying for a while, you’ll want to speak German in a cool, casual manner — like a native. When you feel that urge, it’s definitely time to ditch the books for a while and refocus your energy on authentic, modern-day German slang expressions. The expressions listed here include words borrowed from other languages, silly derivative words, condensed phrases and even guttural sounds that simply don’t get textbook editor approval.

This slang is one step beyond the more tame slang expressions deemed appropriate for beginning language learners. Ciao Servus! Grüß Gott! Greet God! Na? Tschüß! Moin Mach’s Gut Na ja…. Geil. Startups, This Is How Design Works – by Wells Riley. Hand Lettering: The Beginner’s Guide - Skillshare Blog. In order to play baseball you should probably become familiar with the terms “ball,” “bat,” and “base.” On a similar note, in order for you to grasp hand lettering, there’s a variety of terms you should also understand. Most of these terms actually describe the physical parts of specific letters. Did you know there was a name for the bar across a capital A?

Serif Most people first become familiar with this word in high school - scrolling through all the different Microsoft Word fonts in order to snazz up your lackluster history paper (though we all secretly knew Wingdings was the MVP). Sans-Serif On the other hand, sans-serif fonts are typefaces without (you guessed it) serifs. Apex The apex is the point at the top of a letter where two different strokes meet. Cross Bar The crossbar is the horizontal lettering stroke that crosses across the uppercase A and H. Script Bow Open Bow Stem Arm Counter Eye Void Vertex Tittle Bowl Ear Swash. So You Want to Be an Artist. The importance of art production, the training of artists, and the study of art history are clearly reflected in the high level of respect awarded them.

The first modern art critics were German writers of the Enlightenment, and art history was dominated by German scholars well into the 20th century. Many art history graduate degrees outside of Germany still require a reading knowledge of the German language in order to tackle these fundamental original texts. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Bauhaus turned out some of the world’s most exciting designs and products while influencing artistic production and design theory around the world. After World War II, while Germany was divided into East and West, different centers emerged as important hubs of artistic production, generally focused around a university.

Art education in Germany today As most German universities are state funded, bachelor’s and many master’s degree programs are either free or cost around 500 Euro per semester. Epi. Dilettante. Study Finds Making Art May Keep Our Brains Healthy. (photo by Dierk Schaefer, via Flickr) A study conducted on recent retirees in Germany suggests it might. Over 10 weeks, scientists at the University Hospital Erlangen had 14 men and women between the ages of 62 and 70 participate in hands-on art classes, while another 14 took an art appreciation course. Before the testing period began, retirees completed a test measuring their emotional resilience and also had their brains scanned. At the end, the tests were taken again and new brain scans conducted. The results were published in the open-access peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE, in an article titled “How Art Changes Your Brain: Differential Effects of Visual Art Production and Cognitive Art Evaluation on Functional Brain Connectivity.”

Researchers discovered “a significant improvement in psychological resilience” among those who participated in drawing and painting classes; they did not find it in the art-appreciation group. Introduction and key findings Since its inception in 2000, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)—an international test of reading, math, and science—has shown that American 15-year-olds perform more poorly, on average, than 15-year-olds in many other developed countries. This finding is generally consistent with results from another international assessment of 8th graders, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). International test rankings have come to dominate how politicians and pundits judge the quality of countries’ education systems, including highly heterogeneous systems such as that of the United States.

While international tests and international comparisons are not without merit, international test data are notoriously limited in their ability to shed light on why students in any country have higher or lower test scores than in another. This report challenges these conclusions. The report is organized around three main arguments: 1. 5 Things Psychopaths Say To Make You Feel Crazy.

When you hear the word "psychopath," you might think of Hannibal Lecter or Ted Bundy, but through research for my book, it's become clear to me that most psychopaths are actually nonviolent and non-incarcerated members of society. In fact, there's a good chance they'll seem exceptionally altruistic and innocent to the average onlooker.

Psychopaths are, first and foremost, social predators. With no conscience to check their behavior, they use charm and manipulation liberally to get what they want from others. No one is exempt from this. Most psychopaths are actually nonviolent and non-incarcerated members of society. You will likely find a psychopath in your life incredibly thoughtful, sympathetic, and feel an unusually deep connection with them — until they no longer need anything from you. Here are some common phrases you'll hear from a psychopath who's trying to make you doubt your sanity — and how they serve to undermine your independence. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Death map nyc. This is an incomplete map of deaths that occurred in New York City over roughly the past two years. It only includes homicides and motor vehicle related deaths because that seems to be the data available.

Homicides are represented by a skull with a glock pistol pointed at it, other deaths are represented by a skull. Because so many deaths occur at the same locations, a few pixels of noise is applied to the locations so they can be seen. Leaflet, the mapping library used here, is not designed to display this many markers, which is why it's so slow. There’s a chemical that can subtly shift your childhood memories of your own mother.

In some people, it paints mum in a more saintly light, making them remember her as closer and more caring. In others, the chemical has a darker influence, casting mum as a less caring and more distant parent. All of this becomes heavily ironic when you consider that the chemical in question – a hormone called oxytocin – is often billed as the “hormone of love”, and even marketed as “Liquid Trust”. As a new study shows, the reality is much more complicated. Describing oxytocin as the “hormone of love” is like describing a computer as a “writing tool” – it does other things too, some of which aren’t pleasant. Oxytocin is a versatile actor, whose resume includes all sorts of jobs in sex, reproduction, social behaviour and emotions. It can increase trust among people and make them more cooperative (this works in meerkats, too). Despite these many roles, oxytocin is often reduced to a misleading label. World Population History.

Street gangs in New York City | StreetGangs.Com. New York City has a 200 year history of street gangs going back to the early 1800s. During the 1830s & 1840s the street gangs and political leaders worked together in a variety of illegal racquets. Some of the street gangs including youth were were descendents of the colonialists, but many gangs were formed by Irish, German and Jewish immigrants. By the middle of the 20th Century, street gangs were composed by Hispanic and Black youth and by the late 1970s and early 1980s, street gang identity was waning. The advent of Hip-Hop culture, drew youth away from gangs and channeled their time on the streets into a variety of different art forms such as graffiti, break dancing and rapping. The competitive nature of hip-hop caused it to flourish during the 1980s in New York, but by the early 1990s, a new generation of youth were forming street gangs again. The following list reflects gang names that have appeared in the following burroughs of New York.

How To Build A Smartphone Microscope Stand for $10. Obtaining a high quality microscope for your home or a classroom doesn’t require a massive investment. For only $10, basic supplies from a hardware store can be turned into microscope stand for a smart phone capable of reaching up to 175x magnification.

All that is required for this setup is a piece of plywood, some Plexiglass, the lens from a laser pointer, small LED light, and some nuts and bolts to hold it together. By using a smartphone with the microscope, images and videos of the specimens can be taken easily. This is a great tool for getting up close and personal with everyday small objects like salt and pepper, but it can also be used to see plant cells easily. In New York City, in the spring of 1999, a story hit the newspapers of a Long Island woman who had given birth to twins–one white and one black. The woman and her husband were white and the black baby was not theirs, at least not biologically. The embryo that became that baby had been accidentally implanted in the woman’s uterus with the embryo of her biological son, but it belonged to a black couple who were clients at the same fertility clinic, and they wanted their son back.

After a DNA test, a custody battle, a state supreme court ruling, and an unsuccessful appeal, it was decided that the black baby was the child of the black couple, legally and entirely. The story had its peculiarities, like the fact that the fertility clinic had notified the black couple that some of their embryos had been mistakenly implanted in another woman, but did not tell them anything more, so they eventually learned of the birth of their son through a private investigator.

CABINET // Homepage. THE HELD ESSAYS ON VISUAL ARTArt Placebo. I don’t know whether it is true that a janitor at an art gallery was fired not so long ago for sweeping up the artwork the morning after the opening, but the story captures a certain skepticism about art: if art is whatever “we,” or the art cognoscenti, say it is, then there is no such thing as art. The worry that art is a sham is an old idea and it is one that art itself has cherished. The confounding of folk ideas about what is art and what it is not is one of 20th-century art’s most flamboyant gestures, and familiar clichés. But skepticism about art—as I’ll call it—takes more subtle and more interesting forms. Psychology and neuroscience give rise to such skepticism from a different angle. From the point of view of these fields, works of art trigger experience, and experience is a neurological effect.

Skepticism isn’t confined to outsiders either. Fried’s view is not exactly skeptical. But this can’t be right! Yes, critics can be wrong. Endnotes 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Is it perhaps even true that we live by metaphors? In Metaphors We Live By George Lakoff, a linguist, and Mark Johnson, a philosopher, suggest that metaphors not only make our thoughts more vivid and interesting but that they actually structure our perceptions and understanding. Thinking of marriage as a "contract agreement," for example, leads to one set of expectations, while thinking of it as "team play," "a negotiated settlement," "Russian roulette," "an indissoluble merger," or "a religious sacrament" will carry different sets of expectations.

When a government thinks of its enemies as "turkeys or "clowns" it does not take them as serious threats, but if the are "pawns" in the hands of the communists, they are taken seriously indeed.
