I hope that these booklists will be valuable for teachers planning lessons for the coming school year and for families visiting historic sites this summer. The kids and I began our Read Through History project by drawing a timeline with major events in U.S. history. We left spaces on the timeline to record the kids’ favorite books. The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life. The standards establish guidelines for English language arts (ELA) as well as for literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects.

Earlier I wrote about using 10 frames to help students learn basic facts. Using those pre-made ten frames, students used strategies to help them solve equations such as 9 + 7 = ? In the first case, students might use large blank ten frames and put blocks or other counters on them to work out the problem.
