The Poitou - The Donkey with Dreadlocks. A look at the Poitou donkey from South West France.

The Poitou - The Donkey with Dreadlocks

Only thirty years ago, less than thirty of these beautiful and friendly animals were left. Now, thanks to a conservation programme, it looks as if the dreadlocked donkey is set to stay awhile on Planet Earth. The beautiful Poitou region of France, three hundred miles south-west of the French capital Paris, has been harboring a secret. Some secrets are dark and deadly: this one, however, is cute and cuddly. The Ocelot – Really Back From the Brink? Do you hear a lot about the Ocelot?

The Ocelot – Really Back From the Brink?

Hunted for its pelt for hundreds of years, the Ocelot was classified as a vulnerable endangered species until 1996. One look at this still rare animal and the attraction is undeniable but why is it no longer considered endangered? At one point it was thought that this magnificent animal would become extinct in the wild before the twenty first century. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) placed it on its vulnerable list (known as VU) but since 1996 it has been considered no longer at risk in the wild Ranging from South and Central America up to Mexico – it has even been spotted in Texas.

However, this being said, many are still extremely concerned for the future of this gorgeous animal in the wild. Lithe and slender, the Ocelot can grow up a meter in length, with almost half of that again in tail length so it is larger than your average moggy. Manul – the Cat that Time Forgot. Have you ever wanted to take a trip through time to see what animals looked like millions of years ago?

Manul – the Cat that Time Forgot

When it comes to cats there is little or no need. This beautiful specimen is a Manul, otherwise known as Pallas’s Cat. About twelve million years ago it was one of the first two modern cats to evolve and it hasn’t changed since. Spectacled Bears - Bears Of The World. Sloth Bears - Bears Of The World. The sloth bear is thought to have evolved early in the Pleistocene Epoch (approximately 1,800,000 years ago).

Sloth Bears - Bears Of The World

There are 2 subspecies: The Indian sloth bear Melursus ursinus ursinus and the Sri Lankan sloth bear Melursus ursinus inornatus. The origin of their name isn't totally certain. One theory is that early explorers named them after seeing them hanging upside down from trees, similar to actual sloths. Another is that they were named after the slow wandering manner in which they walk. Malayan Sun Bears - Bears Of The World. Along with being the smallest bear species in the world, the sun bear (Ursidae Helarctos malayanus) is also one of the rarest.

Malayan Sun Bears - Bears Of The World

The sun bear's name is derived from the golden colored crescent shaped patch of fur on its chest. It is also known as the honey bear because of its extreme fondness of honey, the dog bear because of its size, and the Malay bear for its geographical location. Out of all species of bears, the least is known about the sun bear because they are so rare. HABITAT The sun bear is found primarily in the rainforests of Southeast Asia and is believed to be in the following countries: India, Bangladesh, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei , and Laos.

Hyper Intelligent Spiders Work Together to Lure, Trap and Eat Human Prey – Zooillogix. So that title may be a little sensationalistic… but the web is alive this morning (no pun intended) with stories about an enormous series of interconnected webs spread out over a 200 yard area in North Texas.

Hyper Intelligent Spiders Work Together to Lure, Trap and Eat Human Prey – Zooillogix

Researchers and visitors alike have been drawn to the sprawling web, but were uncertain whether it was created by social spiders or one terrifying giant spider with unlimited silk production capabilities and a strong work ethic. Kind of a cross between the queen in Aliens and the giant spider, Shelob, that Frodo fights on his way to Mordor. Turns out the social spider theory was correct!

Morphology, Drawing, Fan-Art

A lot of stuff has happened for me last year. I went to a number of conferences and began outdooring more actively. I also took a position at a university, teaching anatomy. Unexpectedly, my cat lung demo really took off, and was featured on a number of sites. The overwhelming response was pretty surprising for me. Some short term plans are in order for ArsAnatomica: I’m going to work on a new and better layout that is more user friendly. Stay tuned! Inflating a set of cat lungs Lungs are by most accounts mundane. Dissection is a destructive process. Here, a set of cat lungs is inflated with a straw. A debt of gratitude is owed to cyborgraptor for her assistance in creating these gifs, as well as the students that helped me film this demo. Making drawings of an otter. Photo of the day: Sketching an Elephant Seal Outside of anatomy stuff, I also enjoy exploring. He’s a Northern Elephant Seal. Read More Hey there! I’m back. Living with Anteaters.
