July 20 iot biggest impact tfriedman. The AI Threat Isn't Skynet. It's the End of the Middle Class. In February 1975, a group of geneticists gathered in a tiny town on the central coast of California to decide if their work would bring about the end of the world. These researchers were just beginning to explore the science of genetic engineering, manipulating DNA to create organisms that didn’t exist in nature, and they were unsure how these techniques would affect the health of the planet and its people. So, they descended on a coastal retreat called Asilomar, a name that became synonymous with the guidelines they laid down at this meeting—a strict ethical framework meant to ensure that biotechnology didn’t unleash the apocalypse. Forty-two years on, another group of scientists gathered at Asilomar to consider a similar problem. But this time, the threat wasn’t biological.

It was digital. The rise of driverless cars and trucks is just a start. Rage Against the Machines In the US, the number of manufacturing jobs peaked in 1979 and has steadily decreased ever since. Go Back to Top.

Alexa Is Conquering the World. Now Amazon’s Real Challenge Begins.

It’s easy to imagine a future in which your virtual personal assistant is everywhere you are. Before long, Alexa, Siri, Google, and others like them will be woven into the fabric of your home, ready to fulfill your every need whim. Need milk? Tell your fridge. Forgot to close the garage door? Grumble about it to the mic in your dashboard. Want to order your post-marathon double cheeseburger and fries before even crossing the finish line? This isn’t as outlandish as it might sound. This isn’t impossible, but it will take a while. A customer shouldn’t have to learn a new language or style of speaking in order to interact with her. It seems everyone is baking Alexa into something.

In theory, Alexa everywhere is a good thing. “Our core goal is to make Alexa’s interactions with a customer seamless and easy,” says Brian Kralyevich, vice president of Amazon’s user experience design for digital products. For now, though, most of these devices are simply Echos in elaborate packaging. Building a Better Connected World. Community | Scholar. "Angelus Novus," Paul Klee (1920) 1. There will be no pedagogical differences between learning in person and learning online. In the old school, it was necessary for students to be in the same room at the same time. The class was a communications architecture, thirty or so children in a classroom, a hundred or so college students in a lecture hall—just enough for the teacher to speak and be heard.

The logistics of communication, transmitting knowledge from teacher to learner, demanded confinement on two dimensions, in time and in space: the walls of the classroom and the cells of the timetable. Then e-learning comes along, and the old school seems to change. In the new school, the pedagogy has changed. 2. In the old school, there was a sharp distinction between instruction and the peculiar practices and artifacts of assessment. Then e-learning comes along, and nothing much changes. In the new school, there is no distinction between learning and assessment. 3. 4. 5.

The Next Big Blue-Collar Job Is Coding. When I ask people to picture a coder, they usually imagine someone like Mark Zuckerberg: a hoodied college dropout who builds an app in a feverish 72-hour programming jag—with the goal of getting insanely rich and, as they say, “changing the world.” But this Silicon Valley stereotype isn’t even geographically accurate. The Valley employs only 8 percent of the nation’s coders. All the other millions? They’re more like Devon, a programmer I met who helps maintain a security-software service in Portland, Oregon.

He isn’t going to get fabulously rich, but his job is stable and rewarding: It’s 40 hours a week, well paid, and intellectually challenging. Politicians routinely bemoan the loss of good blue-collar jobs. Among other things, it would change training for programming jobs—and who gets encouraged to pursue them. These sorts of coders won’t have the deep knowledge to craft wild new algorithms for flash trading or neural networks. Now, to be sure, society does need some superstars! The AI Threat Isn't Skynet. It's the End of the Middle Class. Artificial Intelligence Is Driving Huge Changes at Google, Facebook, and Microsoft. Fei-Fei Li is a big deal in the world of AI. As the director of the Artificial Intelligence and Vision labs at Stanford University, she oversaw the creation of ImageNet, a vast database of images designed to accelerate the development of AI that can “see.” And, well, it worked, helping to drive the creation of deep learning systems that can recognize objects, animals, people, and even entire scenes in photos—technology that has become commonplace on the world’s biggest photo-sharing sites.

Now, Fei-Fei will help run a brand new AI group inside Google, a move that reflects just how aggressively the world’s biggest tech companies are remaking themselves around this breed of artificial intelligence. Alongside a former Stanford researcher—Jia Li, who more recently ran research for the social networking service Snapchat—the China-born Fei-Fei will lead a team inside Google’s cloud computing operation, building online services that any coder or company can use to build their own AI. Below the fold, find the long version. Innovation Trigger: Internet-enabled Physical Simulators and EHR-integrated Performance Improvement Activities Online learning lags behind other industries in adopting new technologies.

This is not because people in online learning are not interested in new technologies; it’s because we’re not a high-revenue industry compared to giant industries like consumer goods. When the Internet of Things started to become real, investors thought first about Internet-enabled refrigerators and cars. We’ve now reached the point, however, where researchers at places like the University of Wisconsin-Madison are developing Internet-enabled physical simulation devices. Performance improvement activities have been an officially recognized part of continuing medical education for years.
