If you're like many Americans, the answer is no — and that's especially true for those of us with diabetes. Studies show as few as 39 percent of people with type 2 diabetes participate in regular physical activity, compared with 58 percent of other Americans. And that's a shame, because working out can help increase insulin action and keep blood sugars in check, says Sheri Colberg-Ochs, PhD, a professor of exercise science at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

Study Says Twitter Can Help You Lose Weight

Researchers at the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health revealed in a report that popular social-networking site Twitter can serve as a support system for those trying to lose weight. In fact, those who participated in a weight loss program had more overall success when they used the site to receive and share information. Not to mention every 10 posts to Twitter by the test group corresponded with about 0.5% weight loss, the study said. "We wanted to find a way to provide the group support we normally deliver during a face-to-face weight loss intervention to the online community," Gabrielle Turner-McGrievy, lead author of the study, told Mashable. "In typical face-to-face delivery methods, there is no way for someone to ask for what to order at a restaurant as they’re sitting and looking at the menu. 10 Steps to Speed Weight Loss - Weight Center - EverydayHealth. TUESDAY, Feb. 14, 2012 — In the past, soda consumption has been linked to respiratory illness, violence in teenagers, weight gain, and many more ills. But in case you need another reason to toss the pop, a new clinical trial from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that choosing water over soda can really help with weight loss — even if you haven’t made other healthy changes to your diet. In the study, which was funded by Nestle Waters USA, researchers split 318 overweight adults into three groups: one that replaced sugary drinks with water, one that switched to diet drinks, and one that was given weight-loss advice and could make changes of their choice. After six months, participants across the boards lost an average of between 4 and 5 pounds. The lesson? To make the switch easier, try experimenting with ways you can make water less boring.

In the third of a series of special blogs for Everyday Health, physician and author Mark Hyman, MD, reviews the latest research on protein versus carbs. Most people know that eating carbohydrates makes you store belly fat, and eating protein puts on muscle. However, a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that when you overeat on a low-protein diet, you store bad fat around your organs including the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. But if you eat a high-protein diet, you add muscle and increase your resting metabolism and muscle mass. Since muscle burns seven times as many calories as fat, that’s a good thing. In the study, researchers admitted 25 brave volunteers to a hospital ward for 12 weeks. The low-protein group (who ate a 5 percent protein diet) lost 1.5 pounds of muscle and gained 7.5 pounds of fat.

Bottom line: Not all calories are the same.

Value of Metformin, Insulin Combo for Type 2 Diabetes Questioned - Diabetes Center

By Robert Preidt, HealthDay News THURSDAY, April 19, 2012 (HealthDay News) — It's not clear whether patients with type 2 diabetes gain any long-term benefit from taking the blood sugar-lowering drug metformin and insulin together rather than insulin alone. That's the conclusion of Danish researchers who reviewed data from 23 clinical trials involving more than 2,200 patients over the age of 18. Reporting online April 19 in the BMJ, they found that taking metformin plus insulin leads to better blood sugar control, less weight gain and less need for insulin.

However, the researchers also noted that the clinical trials provided little information about long-term patient outcomes, such as the total numbers of deaths and deaths from cardiovascular disease. This means that more clinical trials are needed to determine the long-term benefits and harms of the combination, specifically the risks of premature death. By Serena Gordon, HealthDay Reporter MONDAY, Feb. 6, 2012 (HealthDay News) — When it comes to the treatment of type 2 diabetes, the first line of defense is lifestyle changes such as losing weight and exercising more often.

But, if those lifestyle changes don't get blood sugar levels under control, the American College of Physicians (ACP) recommends the drug metformin as the first oral treatment that should be given. If metformin alone can't control blood sugar levels, the ACP advises combining metformin with another blood-sugar lowering medication. But, the evidence isn't yet strong enough for the doctor's group to recommend one medication over another for combination therapy.

"Most diabetes medications do lower [blood sugar], but metformin is more effective with fewer side effects. Diabetic Connect (diabeticconnect) on Pinterest.
