Where to Find Good Educational Videos There’s a right and a wrong way to use videos in the classroom. Not all videos are primed for instructional use, and not all instruction lends itself to video. However, pairing a great video with the tools students need to engage with it can lead to a deeper understanding of or alternate perspective on what’s being taught. Check out the September Education Update article “Showing Videos in the Classroom: What’s the Purpose?” to learn three criteria for selecting an effective video and find tips for helping your students “make the shift from vegging out to tuning in for learning.” Once you have identified the criteria to look for, there are tons of places to find both instructional and supplemental videos on whatever topic you’re teaching.

Flipping the classroom means using Web-enabled instructional strategies that allow educators to spend class time interacting with students rather than lecturing. Most often, this involves assigning students an instructional video to watch online as homework, while problem-solving or other hands-on work occurs class time. The motivation behind flipping is that students can receive more one-on-one attention from the classroom teacher if they are actively working on an assignment in class. Proponents claim this leads to better understanding of a given lesson. In addition to watching videos, students (if the school has arranged a platform ahead of time) can do practice exercises and complete assessments from any computer with Web access.

Today’s learning environment is a far cry from ten years ago. In part this is due to Jon Bergman and Aaron Sams who in 2007 introduced the Flipped Classroom, a technique that has seen continual strong growth and adoption amongst educators. Evidence supporting the effectiveness of flipped teaching piles up, as teachers in turn share and develop best practice. “….they [students] reported it increased their involvement in learning, understanding of the learning material, and confidence in their ability to understand it.” The European Journal of Open, Distance, and E-Learning, Jan. 2014 The crux of flipped learning is allowing students to access material before they come into the classroom.

Flipping with HyperDocs: Part 2 – Flipped Learning Global Initiative In Part 1 of Flipping with HyperDocs, I gave a brief introduction – a teaser, if you will – of why I am so hyped up about HyperDocs. Recall that HyperDocs are more than just a Google Doc containing hyperlinks. HyperDocs can take students to higher levels of thinking, utilizing an inquiry approach to learning. If you are flipping your classroom, you will find it to be a complement to your group space-time.

In its essence, learners prepare for classes by watching videos away from class, allowing the classroom encounter to focus on discussion, exercises, and discourse. Data were collected by a questionnaire distributed toward the end of the course.
