The Online Learning Blog from Study2U Supposedly browsing the internet requires more brain power than watching television. Although judging from some of the websites we’ve come across that assumption is cast into doubt. Here’s some of the sites we like that might get your brain to sit up and listen. Ted A conference that started in 1984 bringing together experts in technology, entertainment and design quickly grew into so much more. The conference itself is invitation only, but the website features all the talks at the conference in high res video format. Is the personalization of the Internet a step backwards? Is the wealth of information that is accessible to us being reduced because the products we use are filtering it all so heavily? This is a discussion that has been gaining momentum in recent weeks.

What’s Best: Microformats, RDFa, or Micro Data? In a recent post by Mike Blumenthal about Google’s announcement of supporting Microformats for local search, Andy Kuiper asked in the comments whether it would be best to go with Microdata versus RDFa or Microformat for marking up local business information. As the number of flavors of semantic markup have grown, I think Andy’s not the only one to wonder which markup protocol might be ideal. Here’s my opinion. When you’re asking “which is better?”, it’s important to know what we’re speaking-of, since there are a number of different goals that people could be pursuing. For some, this is a question of which is better from an elegance-of-coding perspective (if you’re interested in this, you might read Evan Prodromou’s great article, RDFa vs microformats).

Yandex.Company — Yandex Blog Yandex has always been there to give answers. But then there comes a moment when giving answers becomes ‘not enough’. A large portion of the five billion searches that come from almost 100 million Yandex users each month are looking for a solution rather than an answer – people want to pay a bill, check-in for a flight, book a show or a visit to the dentist. Using all our knowledge and expertise, all these years we have been developing products and technologies to figure out what it is exactly that our visitors are looking for and offer this to them in our search results. But even the most relevant of search results doesn’t always give a solution. How to Learn Without Memorizing Photo by Edwin Stemp Rote memorization is an inefficient way to learn. Just retaining a single formula can mean pounding the same information into your skull dozens of times. If your computer hard drive had this accuracy, you’d probably throw it out.

How the World Uses Social Networks [INFOGRAPHIC] Social networks in every country might live on the same Internet, but that doesn't prevent differences in online customs and culture from developing along geographic borders. Ongoing market research service Global Web Index has mapped these differences in the infographic above (click it to enlarge). The research, run by London-based consultancy Trendstream, has conducted six waves of surveys about global consumer adoption of the Internet and social media in 36 markets. It used data from its February 2011 surveys of between 750 and 2,000 online users in each market to define three behavior types: messagers, groupers and content sharers.

RDFa vs microformats from Evan Prodromou I'm fascinated by the idea of including semantic markup in Plain Old XHTML pages, and I'm excited by recent developments in this area. But I'm also concerned about the growing discrepancy between the W3C's initiative, namely RDFa, and the more established but conversely less official microformats effort. I think that having competing standards efforts in this area is going to hurt the advancement of so-called small-s semantic Web technologies, which is going to be bad for everyone. Using XHTML as its own metadata substrate makes for some interesting applications, some of which are starting to disseminate on the Web.

Search Engine Interfaces: Confronting Consistent Inconsistency By Greg R. Notess Is consistency truly the hobgoblin of little minds, as Ralph Waldo Emerson claimed in his essay, “On Self-Reliance?” The savvy searcher is more likely to expect inconsistency from search engines. 100+ Sites to Download All Sorts of Things These days you can find all sorts of things online, from audio books to flash files, from sound effects to CSS templates.
