Observing Teenagers in Their Natural Habitat – Civics is a Verb

I’ve taught lessons on the United Nations, American political parties, federalism, ISIL and memory. I’ve met three times with five amazing students from Schildt High School who I’ll be accompanying to Slovakia next week for a Model United Nations conference. AVID / AVID Binder

The AVID binder is an organizational tool to help students maintain notes and school work in one place. Students are expected to maintain a binder, which has been provided to them along with all of the necessary items needed. They are expected to keep it organized using the AVID methods they have been taught. Students should spend no more than 30 minutes each day organizing and completing their notes. It should be a red flag to parents if their student spends two or more hours the night before a binder check trying to put it together. Is Deval Patrick’s “Miracle School” the Best Example of Mass. Ed Reform?

Deval Patrick praised the seemingly miraculous one-year turnaround of Boston’s Orchard Gardens school–actually, the Orchard Gardens Pilot School. Gov. Patrick’s choice of Orchard Gardens was striking for two reasons: First, it fit the mainstream education-reform narrative, which disproportionately scapegoats teachers for educational failure and argues that the best way to turnaround schools is to fire teachers. In the July 2013 issue of Leader’s Edge, I suggested that business performance could be explained using the following formula: Talent + Energy + Time = Results Consequently, communication approaches that ruin working relationships waste the time, energy, and talent in an organization. Conversely, communication approaches that strengthen working relationships optimize the talent, energy, and time in an organization toward improving results. At the heart of building a stronger relationship with another person is truly respecting that person. What is Your Deepest Communication Value? Welcome to our blog, “Words Can Change Your Brain.” With each post, we’ll present some of the most recent neuroscientific and neuropsychological findings on how the brain processes language and how we can use this knowledge to improve the way we speak and listen to others.

We used to believe that there were only a few language centers in the brain, but we now know that virtually every part of the brain – indeed, even individual neurons – have a mind of their own and their own unique way of communicating to all the other parts of the brain. The same holds true for humans: each one us develops a unique style of communication. Family Engagement: The Top of Everyone's Back-to-School Checklist  With the start of the school year just around the corner, now is an excellent time for all of us to renew our commitment to ensuring all children succeed. So what should be at the top of to-do lists as children head back to school? I suggest that families and their communities begin this year working together to focus on transformative family engagement efforts empowering parents and caregivers to be the strongest voices for their children.

Transformative family engagement begins as a shared responsibility between families, schools and communities. This means ensuring that all families and community leaders are included in decisions regarding their children's education - going way beyond traditional parent involvement activities, such as a once a year open-house school night or parent-teacher conference.
