By the People Suffrage: Women Fight for the Vote. Women’s demand for the vote was radical and transforming.
The movement questioned the country’s commitment to democracy, highlighted persistent racial and class tensions, and challenged existing domestic relationships. It also affected—for better and worse—the women and families who became involved in the struggle. Few women who began the suffrage struggle before the Civil War, including Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, lived long enough to witness its final victory, but their work was carried on by the younger women, such as Carrie Chapman Catt, whom they inspired and taught. The Suffragettes. In 1903 the 'votes for women' campaign was energised by the creation of the Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U).
Founded in Manchester by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters, the W.S.P.U. aimed to 'wake up the nation' to the cause of women's suffrage through 'Deeds not Words'. The decision to relocate the headquarters to London in 1906 transformed the suffrage movement. For the next eight years, the fight to win the vote became a highly public and, at times, violent struggle played out against the backdrop of Edwardian London. By taking their campaign to the streets, the Women's Social and Political Union attracted maximum publicity. Identifiable by their purple, white and green colour scheme, the suffragettes became a familiar sight in central London.

Geschichte des Helene-Lange-Archivs Hervorgegangen ist das HLA aus der 1911 errichteten Helene-Lange-Stiftung (HLSt), die den Zweck verfolgte, das Studium von Frauen durch die Vergabe von Stipendien an Studentinnen und von Druckkostenzuschüssen für Dissertationen zu fördern. Zwar verlor die Stiftung ihr Vermögen bereits nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg durch die Inflation, bestand jedoch bis 1961 weiter.
