I've gotten many questions lately about substituting yarn from both crocheters and knitters alike.

10 Tips for Substituting Yarn!

Being indoors these past few weeks, we are relying on our yarn stashes more and more to satisfy our crochet time and still be able to complete beautiful crochet projects with what we have on hand. Often though we find the perfect pattern only to discover that we may not have the yarn called for in the pattern! No worries at all...here are a few tips to help you substitute yarn for your next project. Happy stitching lovelies! 1. How to Figure Out the Yardage of a Partial Skein. If you’re anything like me, you have a lot of partially-used skeins (or balls or cakes) of yarn lying around. So you’ve probably found yourself in a situation where you think you have enough yarn to make a particular pattern, but even though you can weigh the partial skein to find out how many ounces are left, your pattern only lists required yardage. What’s a girl (or guy) to do? Luckily, this is a pretty easy thing to figure out once you know the equation.

It’s the same equation I used to teach you to how to figure out the yardage of a finished product (read that blog post here), except we’re just changing out some of the information we need to plug in. All you need is your partial skein(s), a calculator, a scale that weighs in ounces or grams (a food scale or a postage scale will work), and the information on the label of the skein you used (or if you’re like me and threw it away long ago, you can look up the yarn’s stats on the company’s web site). Here's what you'll need: Hat of any kind. Love the hat in this post + video? How to Crochet: Invisible Join vs Slip Stitch Join ⋆ Look At What I Made. The invisible join is amazing when working in the round and changing colours at the end of each round. It takes a few seconds longer, but the upside is that it places a needle in your hand, so you might as well work away your tails as you go. Not so nice while you are busy crocheting, but SUPER nice once you have finished and there are no tails mocking you. You don’t have to be an advanced crocheter to use the invisible join, but you DO need to be able to “read” your stitches.

By that I mean that you have to be able to identify the first and second stitches of a round. The invisible join is basically a “false” stitch that lies over the top of your beginning chain or your first standing stitch. Print That Pattern! How to Use the Print Friendly Button on Moogly. Almost every day I have someone ask me how to print the patterns that are here on Moogly. Last month we were talking about a Mystery of Slanted Seams and Crochet Stitches & I showed some examples of our research based on double crochet stitches (DC).

As a rule, crochet stitches are formed by a combination of steps that involve “Yarn Over Hook” (YO) & pulling yarn through the specified loops/stitches, we call this method Classic. The exception to this rule is a Self-Compensated method of crocheting when one of the YO steps is replaced by “Hook Over Yarn” (HO). Please check out our >> previous article << for more explanations about differences in these 2 methods of crocheting. The Perfect Finish: How to Block Crochet.
