As you probably know, Oracle Java (JVM/JDK) will not be available in the Debian / Ubuntu repositories anymore because Oracle retired the "Operating System Distributor License for Java" (JDL) and the only release available in the repositories will be OpenJDK .
Ubuntu is a free operating system or a Linux distribution ("distro") which currently receives the second highest hits after Linux Mint at DistroWatch . Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 12.10 use Unity as a default user interface for the GNOME-3 desktop environment.
If you’ve used Ubuntu a while, you might remember GNOME applets – icons that sat on your panel and gave you access to controls and information. If you miss panel applets, try installing third-party indicator applets for Ubuntu’s Unity desktop.
Typing commands into a terminal may seem tedious, but with the right tools, the command line can be incredibly powerful. Here are our favorite command line tools that do awesome things you just can't match in a GUI. Note : While a lot of the tutorials and videos on this page are Linux-centric, these commands are useful for everyone.
Ubuntu for phones / tablets / android / tv
The Eclipse packages in Ubuntu are are very out of date. The latest version in the Ubuntu repos is 3.5.2 where as the latest version of Eclipse is 3.7. I’m posting this because Ubuntu 11.04 uses the new Unity desktop which uses overlay-scrollbars (scrolls bars that are hidden until you hover over them).
Updated : 16/10/2012 : Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal final is almost out. The final release it scheduled to be out in the 18th of October 2012. After you actually get done with the installation, there would likely exist a heap of things you still need to take care of.
