What is a Histogram in Photography?

Histograms are an essential tool for every photographer. They can help you adjust camera settings before you take a shot, or guide your fixes in a photo editor later on. They can immediately tell you what edits are needed for a picture, and serve as a signpost again and again while you’re editing it. A digital photograph is made up of tiny dots, called pixels, and the histogram gives an overview of the brightness levels for those dots.

Its horizontal axis indicates, from left to right, the individual tones from black, through gray, to pure white (typically given in values from 0 to 255).
