* Disney Research's Botanicus Interacticus adds capacitive touch to ordinary plants, we go hands-on

In partnership with Berlin-based Studio NAND, Walt Disney's experience development arm, coined Disney Research, has found a way to take human-plant interaction to an almost freakish level. The project's called Botanicus Interacticus, and centers around a custom-built capacitive sensor module, which pipes a very low current through an otherwise ordinary plant, then senses when and where you touch. Assuming your body is grounded, the device uses more than 200 frequencies to determine exactly where you've grabbed hold of a stem. Then, depending on how it may be programed, the sensor can trigger any combination of feedback, ranging from a notification that your child is attempting to climb that massive oak in the yard again, to an interactive melody that varies based on where your hand falls along the plant. These start-ups have utilized the Kinect or a Kinect-like device to make an affordable solution for modelling actual spaces and products. I was ecstatic when Microsoft released the Kinect and then the development software. It’s such a powerful hardware/software combo. It made sense that cheap, 3D scanning was just around the corner. I’m happy to see many amazing third-party applications and innovations now using this platform. Skanect creates 3D models of you and your house using Kinect sensor. Photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is an estimative scientific method that aims at recovering the exact positions and motion pathways of designated reference points located on any moving object, on its components and in the immediately adjacent environment.

Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry employs high-speed imaging and the accurate methods of remote sensing in order to detect, measure and record complex 2-D and 3-D motion fields (see also SONAR, RADAR, LiDAR etc.). Photogrammetry feeds the measurements from remote sensing and the results of imagery analysis into computational models in an attempt to successively estimate, with increasing accuracy, the actual, 3-D relative motions within the researched field. Its applications include satellite tracking of the relative positioning alterations in all Earth environments (e.g. tectonic motions etc), the research on the swimming of fish, of bird or insect flight, other relative motion processes (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing).

Handheld 3D Scanner Lets You Digitize Objects And Rooms In Minutes

A Silicon Valley startup wants to give you the power to “scan your world” with a handheld scanner that rapidly creates 3D maps of objects and rooms, complete with colors and textures. While it may seem like you’d have to have a steady hand and move slowly through a room to scan it, a demo video of the device from MatterPort implies that the 3D maps can be generated by simply passing it through the space, sort of like virtually painting a room. Just imagine you’re using a squeegee and you get the idea. In one of its promotional videos, the startup even claims, “MatterPort does for 3D modeling what photography did for painting.” Liti Holographics - 3D holograms for a 3D world. * Our Work from Inition.

Helping Kinect Recognize Faces. To use a Kinect for Xbox 360 gaming device is to see something akin to magic.

Helping Kinect Recognize Faces

Different people move in and out of its view, and Kinect recognizes the change in a player and responds accordingly. It accomplishes this task despite the enormous variation in what it sees. Lighting can change within a room. A player might appear close to the Kinect one minute, farther away the next. And faces change second to second as players react to the action.

Kinect Identity, as the device’s player-recognition tool set is called, recognizes people by looking for three visual cues: The heights of the players. The color of their clothing.Their faces. That last element is the key. That’s where Microsoft Research work played a significant role in helping Kinect learn who is who. Identifying a face is not an easy task for a machine. “The fundamental difficulty comes from intrapersonal variation,” Sun says. Sun began work on face recognition three years ago. The Most Important New Technology Since the Smart Phone Arrives December 2012. By now, many of us are aware of the Leap Motion, a small, $70 gesture control system that simply plugs into any computer and, apparently, just works.

If you’ve seen the gesture interfaces in Minority Report, you know what it does. More importantly, if you’re familiar with the touch modality – and at this point, most of us are – the interface is entirely intuitive. It’s touch, except it happens in the space in front of the screen, so you don’t have to cover your window into your tech with all those unsightly smudges. To understand how subtly revolutionary Leap will be, watch the video below, shot by the folks at The Verge, where you’ll also find more juicy details on the device’s specs and inner workings. Unlike a touchscreen interface, with the Leap, there’s no friction. * Leap Motion. Sensors Are About To Disrupt Your Industry. Wireless sensors are starting to unleash a wave of disruptive innovation that will bring with it immense entrepreneurial opportunities. There will be more wireless sensors in our world--by far--than there are smartphones, dumb phones, tablets, laptops and PCs combined.

Billions upon billions today--and trillions tomorrow. They will give us superhuman senses: to see "through" walls, to "hear" sounds many miles away, to "know" things we never could have known before. No matter the size of your company, the ability to look at this new sensor-enabled world through the eyes of an entrepreneur is the price of admission.
