Media Matters for America

We continue our interview with ousted Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed and ask him if he plans to seek office again. The Jewish holiday of Passover and Christianity’s holiest day, Easter, share millennia of history, themes of redemption, hope and growth, even signature foods, but they rarely coincide. This year, thanks to the complicated dynamics of the lunar calendar, the basis of the Jewish year, they also share a weekend. » read more http://www.mcclatchydc.com/
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday no jobs were created in August. Zero. Nada. Well, not quite. The strike at Verizon reduced the labor force by 45,000.

http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/ The Washington Post 's Neil Irwin noted this morning that when it comes to the monthly jobs report, "We're due for a disappointing number." He was right -- though forecasts projected about 200,000 new jobs in March, the new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics fell short of expectations. The U.S. economy added 120,000 jobs last month, while the overall unemployment rate dipped slightly to 8.2%. For the first time in a very long while, public-sector layoffs were less of a drag on the overall totals: the private sector added 121,000 jobs in March, while government lost only 1,000. By any measure, today's disappointing totals are a real setback.

Last week, The BRAD BLOG's legal analyst Ernest Canning reported on the lawsuit filed by the League of Women Voters, the NAACP and the ACLU in Pennsylvania, together with the Homeless Advocacy Project and the Advancement Project, against the state Republicans' new polling place Photo ID restriction passed into law in March. The law, unless it's blocked, is set to make it much harder, if not impossible for many previously-legal student, elderly, minority and urban dwelling voters to cast their vote this November. Canning predicts, however, that, like a similar GOP law in Wisconsin this year , and one in Missouri back in 2006, the new attempt to remove voting rights will be found in violation of the fundamental right to vote guaranteed under Pennsylvania's state Constitution. We'll see if he's correct.

The Russian military have successfully launched a top secret advanced intercontinental ballistic missile. It is designed to counter the American antimissile shield currently being deployed in several regions. The new weapon is an advanced version of the Topol-M and Yars missiles, already deployed by the Russian Strategic Missile Forces. The experiment was boosted off from the Plesetsk launch site in north-western Russia’s Arkhangelsk region on Wednesday. It delivered its test block to the Kura target range in Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East.

Dan Balz, the Washington Post's chief correspondent ( 5/20/12 ), complains that President Barack Obama hasn't solved America's fiscal problems: Obama has drawn criticism for failing to offer more forceful leadership. He established the Simpson-Bowles commission but declined opportunities at key moments to push and prod for its consideration and enactment. There's an odd syntax here that reflects some slippery thinking. Grammatically, "its" in the second sentence seems like it would refer to the Simpson-Bowles commission, but that would be nonsensical. You're presumably supposed to think it means the commission's plan , but that's a trick– there was no plan passed by the commission as a whole.
