Polymorphic Installation – A Kinetic Double-Sided Bench
Ten architecture students from Columbia University GSAPP have recently completed Polymorphic, a kinetic installation utilizing an innovative design and engineering solution inspired by the kinetic action of a see-saw and the reverberating motion of a slinky. The group consisted of Charlie Able, Alexis Burson, Ivy Chan, Jennifer Chang, Aaron Harris, Trevor Hollyn Taub, Brian Lee, Eliza Montgomery, Vernon Roether, and David Zhai. The installation is comprised of a double-sided bench which transforms through a series of 119 unique and interconnected sections into a chaise lounge and finally an interactive balance board.

The development of specialized treatments of concrete and glass, customization through digital fabrication, and parametric design tools have brought about a contemporary resurgence of surface articulation, reopening the general issue of surface composition as a “legitimate” aspect of design, after almost a century of (near) omission by modernism. A wide variety of firms, among them Zaha Hadid (Patrik Schumacher), Herzog and de Meuron, Weil Arets, Aranda\Lasch and Foreign Office Architects, have been reintroducing this aspect of design -- most notably the last, which in addition to built work, Farshid Mousavi’s The Function of Ornament includes surface articulation as part of its theoretical explorations.To begin our discussions centered around the sg2013 Challenge: Constructing for Uncertainty, we begin with a series of articles written by leading researchers and practioners in the field.

This techniques seminar introduces students to the next generation of computer aided design tools that facilitate movement between digital modeling and material prototyping. Working from the idea of parametric design, the seminar methodically moves through a project exploring NURBS modeling, parametric modeling, rapid prototyping, mold making and material prototyping. The software environments that the seminar will introduce are Rhinoceros 4.0 and Grasshopper 0.5, while the rapid prototyping tools include the Universal Laser Cutter and the Dimension 3d Printer.paneling tools
