Right now (8 a.m. ET) the website lists 75 colleges where walkouts are expected to happen. Meanwhile, on Morning Edition today, Planet Money's Zoe Chace reported from the protest site in Manhattan that it appears "everybody has a say in everything" in the general assembly that makes decisions about what the Occupy folks, who represent many different interests, will do. There's wonderful audio in her piece of the protesters — who aren't being allowed by authorities to use amplifiers or bullhorns — chanting to pass along what's being said from one group at the general assembly to another.

While the Occupy Wall Street movement has yet to present a coherent agenda or message, the college students who marched today in support of it were clear about their concerns. They banded together to make their voices heard, many citing the rising amount of student loan debt and the increasing cost of college, in addition to a dearth of decent jobs for recent graduates. "With budget cuts and tuition increases, students' voices are demanding to be heard," said Conor Tomás Reed, 30, a participant in today's walkout. Reed teaches at the City University of New York and is also a student at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. "It's a collective roar, and students are beyond disgusted and fed up. In the fall we greatly enjoyed attending this series at Hampshire College – a very interesting series of panel discussions on Occupy. These were a part of the course “Occupy Wall Street: History, Theory, Practice” led by Professor Margaret Cerullo and Professor Michele Hardesty. The panel discussions with activists and scholars will take place in the West Lecture Hall of Franklin Patterson Hall and are open to the public. These panels will begin at 4pm SHARP.

For the duration of the series, Occupy Amherst attended these events and held its weekly meetings at their conclusion, inviting any students, panelists, and professors present to join in. An Open Letter to Greg Mankiw

Wednesday November 2, 2011 Dear Professor Mankiw— Today, we are walking out of your class, Economics 10, in order to express our discontent with the bias inherent in this introductory economics course. We are deeply concerned about the way that this bias affects students, the University, and our greater society. As Harvard undergraduates, we enrolled in Economics 10 hoping to gain a broad and introductory foundation of economic theory that would assist us in our various intellectual pursuits and diverse disciplines, which range from Economics, to Government, to Environmental Sciences and Public Policy, and beyond.

A legitimate academic study of economics must include a critical discussion of both the benefits and flaws of different economic simplifying models. Harvard graduates play major roles in the financial institutions and in shaping public policy around the world. Sincerely, The Harvard Crimson [video]Ec10 Walkout. GREG MANKIW: OWS comes to Ec 10. Mankiw is the main professor in the Economics 10 class that has about 750 students. Jose DelReal, a reporter with The Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper, said about 60 students participated in the walk-out. Mankiw told CNNMoney Wednesday morning that the class is relatively apolitical, and that guest lecturers have included Larry Summers, who was a top economic advisor for both Presidents Obama and Clinton. "When I enter a classroom, I try to leave my politics at a door," Mankiw said.

"The class is very conventional economics. An open letter to Mankiw posted online by protest leaders explained that the walk-out was being done "to express our discontent with the bias inherent in this introductory economics course. Chanted students from colleges around the Boston area this past Wednesday in a citywide walkout and protest affiliated with Occupy Boston. In recent years, state and national governments have cut funding for public higher education. As a result, schools have increased tuition and fees and decreased financial aid, making college education inaccessible to many low-income students. These rising prices have contributed to mounting American student debt, which now exceeds a trillion dollars and is larger than total US credit card debt. These impediments to education are part of a broken economic system in which the wealthiest one percent profit off the labor of the 99 percent. This is the context in which we helped organize the student walkout from Professor Mankiw’s Economics 10.

GOOD: Did a Harvard Economics Class Cause the Financial Crisis? Harvard grads frequently go on to highly influential jobs on Wall Street, at think tanks, and in government.

GOOD: Did a Harvard Economics Class Cause the Financial Crisis?

Did the principles they learned in their alma mater's most popular class cause America’s financial crisis and growing wealth gap? That's the view of a group of approximately 70 students who walked out of professor N. Gregory Mankiw's Economics 10 class this week in solidarity with the Occupy protests happening coast-to-coast. The students say the conservative slant of the economic theories taught by the prominent professor are driving policies that create inequality. According to their open letter to Mankiw—who advised President George W. Without any "critical discussion of both the benefits and flaws" of alternative economic theories, the students say, it's "difficult for subsequent economics courses to teach effectively" since coeds who take the class are familiar with "only one heavily skewed perspective. " Liveblogging the #OccupyWallStreet National Student Walkout.

As I mentioned on Monday, the idea of a national student walkout in concert with the Occupy Wall Street movement has been gaining traction recently. Late last night a list of 75 campuses that have expressed plans to participate was posted on the Occupy Colleges Facebook page, and though not all of these walkouts may come together, experience shows that this sort of national action tends to bring campuses out of the woodwork who haven’t publicly stated their plans in advance.

(And in fact, looking again at the list, I know there are some colleges planning walkouts who aren’t yet listed there.) It remains to be seen how big today’s action is going to be — I don’t think anyone can predict that at this point — but a few things are worth bearing in mind as the day unfolds: First, it’s October. In Texas, a handful of college campuses joined the movement including The University of Texas, Texas State University and Austin Community College; 75 universities and colleges across the nation are listed as having executed mid-day walkouts. At UT-Austin, roughly 50 students holding signs and chanting slogans mimicked protests of rising unemployment and corporate welfare in other cities like Boston and Chicago.
