Carved Book Landscapes by Guy Laramee. (click images for detail) For the better part of three decades multidisciplinary artist Guy Laramee has worked as a stage writer, director, composer, a fabricator of musical instruments, a singer, sculptor, painter and writer. Among his sculptural works are two incredible series of carved book landscapes and structures entitled Biblios and The Great Wall, where the dense pages of old books are excavated to reveal serene mountains, plateaus, and ancient structures. Of these works he says: So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains.

Laramee’s next show will be in April of 2012 at the Galerie d’Art d’Outremont in Montreal. Scraping Away the Skin on Skull Nickels — Atomik – We Find The Awesome For You. By James on September 28th, 2011 at 3:07 pm Art, Picture Pages Welcome Stumblers! If you think this post is cool, you can find more of our latest and more popular posts in the sidebar to the right. If you want to receive updates from us in the future you can follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook or sign up for updates via email (we’ll never send you any spam, we promise!). Help We Are Atomik grow! The term “Hobo Nickel” describes any small-denomination coin (though, normally soft nickels) that people carve to create miniature reliefs of…well, all sorts of things. It started sometime in the 18th century but continues to this day; There’s even an entire society dedicated to the art of nickel carving. This all sounds stimulating, I know, but have a little faith.

Source – Colossal Art & Design Other Things You Might Find Interesting. Choi Xooang. (click images for detail) All at once delicate and nightmarish these painted polymer clay figures by Seoul-based artist Choi Xooang are nothing short of remarkable. Try as I might it’s hard to find a definitive, trustworthy article to source information from, and even the spelling of his name seems to change from site to site.

However it seems generally accepted that Xooang is attempting to draw attention to human rights abuses in Korea, and seeing these somewhat macabre, stunted figures unable to see or speak, it’s hard to dispute that. You can see much more of his work at Mu Um and Slash, though be warned it’s somewhat graphic (generally nudity). I admit the mushroom cloud sculpture is a bit of a one-off, but I saw it was just posted yesterday and couldn’t resist. Also, if you like this, you’ll most likely enjoy the work of Emil Alzamora.

Huge Model of Isengard From Over 22000 LEGOs. Master LEGO building team OneLUG have completed their incredible model of the Battle of Isengard, a key battle in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The model includes a whopping seven-foot tall Orthanc tower, dozens of ents, over a hundred orcs, and two small hobbits. Built to minifig scale, the entire tableau weighs 145 pounds, and uses 22,000 LEGO bricks across its eight-foot diameter. We’ve seen some pretty incredible LEGO creations inspired by J.R.R. Tolkein, but this one takes the cake. Incredibly, key scenes from the Lord of the Rings film are depicted in exacting detail across the diorama. It will be on display at BrickCon this weekend, though you can see some choice images after the break.

The Tire Art of Wim Delvoye. For his series titled "Pneu", Belgian artist Wim Delvoye created a series of decorative objects by hand-carving intricate patterns and floral motifs on used car tires.

Through his manipulation of found objects, Delvoye transforms things that seem useful in everyday life into sculptural pieces that carry a different value from their original intended purpose. Delvoye calls his own approach to art ‘glocal’, referring to ‘local’ and ‘global’, which is his own ironical way of describing art. Find out more about Wim's work here. Ceramic artworks by Eva Funderburgh. Eva Funderburgh is a ceramic artist located in Seattle, Washington. Coming from an education in chemistry and sculpture, she has focused herself on making strange whimiscal clay creatures. She works on exploring the colors natural to the clay and the finishing process of woodfire, and strives to present creatures that equally mix whimsy, mischief, and threat.

(click for detail) Japanese artist Tomoko Shioyasu was born in Osaka in 1981 and majored in sculpture at the Kyoto City University of Arts. Her immense floor-to-ceiling tapestries are meticulously cut by hand from enormous sheets of paper using utility knives and soldering irons. Her work evokes some of nature’s most complex creations: the organic patterns of cells, the flow of water, and the forces of wind. How these are hung without tearing seems nearly impossible.

Her latest work, “Vortex” (first two images) is currently on display as part of the show Bye Bye Kitty!!!
