WORK to restore a weather-beaten statue of Robert the Bruce ahead of the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn has started. Scaffolding has been built around the monument and fencing put up at the ancient battleground near Stirling, where Bruce is said to have defeated King Edward II's English army to secure an independent monarch for Scotland. The National Trust for Scotland is working in partnership with Historic Scotland to transform the site in time for the 700th anniversary of the battle, in 2014. The equestrian statue, which depicts an axe-wielding Bruce and his charge, was originally cast in bronze but it has been weathered over the decades and is slowly turning green.

Sir William Wallace (on the right above) was the first leader of the Scots to rebel against the rule of the English King Edward I who had over-run Scotland in 1296. After a geurilla campaign, Wallace appeared to be successful when he defeated the English army at Stirling Bridge in 1297. But the freedom was short-lived and Wallace and the Scots army were defeated at Falkirk in 1298. The committee raised over £40,000 and the sculptor, Andrew Brown, created a dynamic and imaginative representation of King Robert in his mature years.
