Teaching Students with Emojis, Emoticons, & Textspeak. I □ My □□□! Teaching the Emoji Generation. Emoji Get to Know You Activity. “Emoji and emoticons have developed to mean much more in language than the faces they represent.”- Lauren Collister (2015) For the past year, I’ve been studying how learners use emoticons, emoji, and text speak to communicate, read and write.

Emoji Get to Know You Activity

Emojis are part of digital literacy and citizenship. When our learners use emojis in their writings, they are humanizing their digital experience. They are letting others know how they feel, offering feedback, and revealing their tone. Our learners are also translating, decoding, playing with language, creating pictograms, and contributing to an international communication system. I have developed various emoji activities to engage learners and have been sharing them in my latest keynote, I My. World Emoji Day / July 17. Pink Slip Emoji? Pink Slip Emoji? Houston Rockets Fire Social Media Manager After Controversial Tweet

The Houston Rockets, whose Twitter account posted a tweet that got everyone’s attention during Game 5 of a Western Conference first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks, fired the person who ran the account. On the day after the tweet in question — which was subsequently deleted — the Rockets dismissed their digital communications manager Chad Shanks, whose attempt at damage control was as good as one could have expected, given the situation. Those attempts obviously weren’t good enough for the Rockets, whose decision was documented in this brief story by the Houston Chronicle.

Here’s a brief recap of the story as it unfolded on Tuesday night, when it was beginning to become apparent that the Rockets were going to win Game 5 and eliminate the Mavericks from the playoffs, four games to one: Control Alt Achieve: Emoji Writing Prompt Generator with Google Sheets. In an earlier blog post, I shared a “Google Sheets Writing Prompt Generator” that randomly combined nouns and adjectives to give students inspiration for writing projects.

In this post we are going to take a twist on that idea … with emojis! They say a picture is worth a thousand words. If that is so, then emojis should be able to bring even more meaning and ideas and inspiration than just words alone. Giving students a random set of emojis could be a great way to help inspire their writing, as the student tries to find a way to work each image into their story or poem. Using Emojis to Teach Critical Reading Skills. Emojis are more mainstream than ever.

Using Emojis to Teach Critical Reading Skills

The Oxford English Dictionary named the Face With Tears of Joy emoji the word of the year for 2015, presidential candidates are asking for feedback in emojis, and the appearance of new emojis is considered news by major media outlets. Although looking up emoji definitions is relatively simple, I often turn to my students for more nuanced explanations. After a bit of laughter, my students patiently demonstrate the multiple uses for a single emoji, help me decode emoji-laden Instagram comments, and advise me on murky racial or gender implications. Internet-inspired trends may not seem important next to English 101’s selected texts, but the way students seamlessly navigate emoji usage is similar to critical reading skills we practice in class. I’m not about to throw out traditional texts, but emojis offer an engaging opportunity to transfer digital skills to a written context. #EmojiSciece with Bill Nye. Emoji Engine.

Memoangeles/Thinkstock Wired magazine last week published a fun and illuminating piece on how teenagers use social media.

How do olds use emoji?

It exposed fascinating generational divides in emoji use and explained a few taboos that old people might otherwise have never known about. For instance, you probably already follow the “deep like” commandment—don’t like or comment on old posts, because you’ll look like a stalker—but did you realize that, in the event of an accidental deep like, unliking is even worse? The poster receives a notification and then sees that you hastily tried to cover your tracks, which is not very chill. In teen world, old posts are like old people: best ignored, but not worth twisting yourself into a pretzel to act indifferent to. In addition, the piece revealed, thou shalt not post pictures of food on Instagram (boring, and a total golden years tell) and thou shalt definitely never use the same snap in a personal message that you post to your public Snapchat story. □ Emojipedia — □ Emoji Meanings □□□□□

Emoji are perfect and polite ways to cut off a written interaction.

“Most sincerely, Katy,” I could scrawl, free to ignore that particular back-and-forth until the mail boat made its return trip. But the rapid-fire interaction of texting and IMing means that modern communicators face a new and modern conundrum: How do you tomahawk a conversation without making it weird? Emoji beautifully solve this problem, magicking us out of interpersonal jams, especially when we are trying really hard to end transmission. In 1995, sales of pagers were booming among Japan’s teenagers, and NTT Docomo’s decision to add the heart symbol to its Pocket Bell devices let high school kids across the country inject a new level of sentiment (and cuteness) into the millions of messages they were keying into telephones every day. Docomo was thriving, with a bona fide must-have gadget on its hands and market share in the neighborhood of 40 percent. But when new versions of the Pocket Bell abandoned the heart symbol in favor of more business-friendly features like kanji and Latin alphabet support, the teenagers that made up Docomo’s core customer base had no problem leaving for upstart competitor Tokyo Telemessage.

By the time Docomo realized it had misjudged the demand for business-focused pagers, it was badly in need of a new killer app. 2015: The Year of Emoji Diversity. □ Get Emoji — List of all Emojis to ✂ Copy and □ Paste □ Emoji. 92 Teen Text Terms Decoded for Confused Parents. Not so long ago, most teenagers’ text messages read to other people like a jumble of seemingly disconnected letters, numbers, and odd punctuation. Using a combination of shortened words, creative spellings, and a liberal sprinkling of unusual punctuation, teen text message mavens created their own form of language — so-called text speak (a term itself boiled down to “txtspk”). These days, teens are texting more than ever, but the advent of QWERTY smartphone keyboards, predictive text, autocorrect, and the removal of message character limits should allow young social butterflies the opportunity to type full, real words.

However, the confusing shorthand continues to live on anyway. An emoji guide for your commit messages.
