Republicans have morality upside down. Santorum, Gingrich, and even Romney are barnstorming across the land condemning gay marriage, abortion, out-of-wedlock births, access to contraception, and the wall separating church and state. But America’s problem isn’t a breakdown in private morality. http://robertreich.org/

Don't Believe The Scary Words You Hear About The Debt Ceiling | Capital Gains and Games

Posted by Stan Collender Much of what being said about what happens if the federal debt ceiling isn’t raised immediately when the current borrowing limits is reached is just wrong. My column in this week’s Roll Call tries to correct the misinformation, misunderstanding, and...well...lies. Don’t Believe What’s Said About Debt Ceiling There is so much misinformation and grossly misleading talk about what will happen if the federal debt ceiling isn’t increased that, before any more unnecessary bloodcurdling language is used that increases everyone’s anxiety, it’s worth taking a few steps back from the edge. First, not raising the current federal debt limit absolutely will not immediately shut down the federal government. http://capitalgainsandgames.com/blog/stan-collender/2104/dont-believe-scary-words-you-hear-about-debt-ceiling

One of the more striking aspects of the pre-emptive strikes on Peter Beinart's tightly argued polemic, The Crisis Of Zionism , is not just their viciousness, but their avoidance of the core issue of the book: Why continue to build the settlements? http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/

Federal workers on average not only are better educated than those in the private sector, but are also more experienced and older. This helps explain the compensation gap that appears when looking at unadjusted wages.

The Text of a Lecture at Pennsylvania State University – School of International Affairs February 2, 2012 “The Roles of Finance, Food, and Force in US Foreign Policy” * Before I begin, I’d like to thank Jan Burnett and Casey Hilland of the School of International Affairs Student Government Association, as well as Dr. Tiyanjana [...] An excellent article by Kathy Miriam from The Journal of Social Philosophy In the 1980s, U.S. feminism fractured along political fault-lines defined by conflicting views of prostitution and pornography and related conceptions of power, agency, and sexuality.1 The “sex wars”—as they were unfortunately, popularly labeled—were apparently settled by the end of the decade, with “pro-sex” [...] “Sexualisation” has become a much-debated issue in recent years, and a noticeable feature is the assumption that feminists who oppose sexual objectification are generating a “moral panic”. http://www.feralscholar.org/blog/
March 30 The misleading assault on the president’s energy policies continues. A conservative group’s TV ad claims “we will all pay more at the pump” because the administration “blocked” the Keystone XL pipeline. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell claims that the pipeline “could have brought 700,000 barrels of oil to the market … More >>

http://www.atrios.blogspot.com/ There are a lot of things wrong with unpaid internships, such as, you know, the exploitive use of free labor in violation of the law, but they're also a way of perpetuating the class system in certain kinds of industries. For some, if the choice is a prestigious internship or McDonalds, McDonalds will win, because mommy and daddy can't and won't lend them $25,000. And really, these places can't afford to even pay minimum freaking wage? They're just assholes.

I haven’t read Rachel Maddow’s new book, Drift . That is because, unlike Th e New Republic 's Leon Wieseltier, I am not a book critic. I am a national security professional . This means that – also unlike Wieseltier – I spend my days immersed in the thinking and writing of defense experts and policymakers – in the U.S. government, in the military, in other nations, in the non-governmental sector. Wieseltier has written a review of Drift in which he takes issue with, well, a lot of things – the fact that Maddow has a TV show among them. But his core problem seems to be her suggestion that we might have a societal problem with “the artificial primacy of defense among our national priorities.” http://www.democracyarsenal.org/

FDR Memorial: The Four Freedoms (Wikipedia) The Republican Presidential primary has unmasked one astonishingly ugly facet after another in the GOP’s character, leaving the party’s soul stripped bare of any moral pretense and revealing, at its core, an appalling indifference to — even a smug pleasure in — other peoples’ suffering. Consider what has been on display in just three months of debates and campaigning. We’ve watched a party driven by fear and greed, and more important, obsessed with feelings ranging from indifference to anger to hate for the “other.”
