How to document a sound? | Technical Writing ToolBox. As intriguing it may seem, have you ever considered the idea of documenting a sound in your writing? It seems impossible, right? Apparently, technical writers working at Electrolux have discovered a creative way to do exactly that. This illustration describes various sound (noises) which occur inside a freezer during its normal use. I know what you are thinking but this is not fake and this user manual (and the actual product) does exists. In case you were wondering about the Electrolux AEG AGN58210F0 freezer, here it is: Did you ever had the need to document a sound in your writing? Like this: Like Loading...

Yesterday, we wrote about the Wellcome Library’s opening up of its digital archives and making over 100,000 medical images freely available online.

If you’ve already made your way through this choice selection (or if the prospect of viewing a 19th century leg amputation doesn’t quite pique your curiosity) have no fear. Getty Publications just announced the launch of its Virtual Library, where readers can freely browse and download over 250 art books from the publisher’s backlist catalogue. The Virtual Library consists of texts associated with several Getty institutions. Readers can view extensively researched exhibition catalogues from the J. Paul Getty Museum, including Paul Cézanne’s late-life watercolours, when the painter raised the still life to a high art (Cézanne in the Studio: Still Life in Watercolors, 2004), as well as the woefully underappreciated Flemish illustrations of the 15th and 16th centuries (Illuminating the Renaissance: The Triumph of Flemish Manuscript, 2003).

겨울왕국 엘사 제작기! 7 mistakes you didn’t realize you were making in building your nonprofit career. Photo credit: rvlsoft, Shutterstock I recently had the opportunity to mentor a young woman who wanted to start a nonprofit. Because I work exclusively with new nonprofit execs on core-competency building and she wanted to be an exec, it seemed like we were positioned to do something great together. She had the passion for her cause and I had the practical management knowledge…how could we lose?

Within our first few weeks working together I realized we had a problem. Although my mentee professed to wanting a long-term career in the nonprofit sector, her actions did not reflect that all; deadlines were consistently being missed and she seemed to be having trouble staying focused on her goal. After a few months of trying to make our partnership work, I finally broke it off. As a nonprofit professional, I know how exciting it is to dream of devoting your career to doing something that changes the world. 1. 2. 3.

Olie Pullen, surrounded by her favourite dolls in her bedroom in the Montreal family home. (Photo by Roger Lemoyne) Since the summer of 2012, Olie Pullen has kept in her bedroom closet a Wonder Woman costume, which she loves, but has struggled to actually wear.

The plan had been to don it on Halloween two years ago, but when that day came, Olie, now 11, chose to be a vampire instead. Dressing up in the red and blue costume would have exposed her at school and around her Montreal neighbourhood in a way that didn’t feel right yet: Olie was, after all, born a boy. Oliver. When he was a toddler, at his own insistence and to the surprise of his parents, Oliver began playing with princess dresses and dolls. So good, in fact, that Olie wore that Wonder Woman costume last Halloween, with her mother cheering, ‘You go for it, girl!’ Meanwhile, several provincial governments have added “gender expression” to the list of prohibited grounds for discrimination. On January 5th, 12 year old Taylor Smith passed away from complications with pneumonia. It left her parents, family, and friends absolutely devastated. She was a joyful child just like any other, full of life. But it was after some time had passed that they made a discovery they’d never forget. As her parents went through her belongings, they found several letters Taylor had written to others. But one was very different. It wasn’t supposed to be opened until 2023, but because she had passed on, her parents decided to open it. The contents of it show the character and personality of Taylor.

She was a special girl like no other. Here’s a transcript of the letter: Dear Taylor, How’s life? Don’t forget, it’s Allana’s 11th birthday today! Speaking of, how’s your relationship with GOD? Now, have you gone on any more mission trips? Is Doctor Who still on the air? Do you have your own place yet? Have you been to Dollywood recently? Well, I think that’s all. Sincerely, Taylor Smith. Grilled Basil Chicken Sandwiches Recipe. Jack and Beverly's Thaumatropes. Our Thaumatropes The thaumatrope is among the simplest of the "persistence of vision" toys that were introduced in the early 19th century. In its basic form it is a card with a different picture on each surface and string attached to each side. When the string is wound up then released the card spins rapidly merging the two pictures together. Less common were examples like the mechanical toy below where two images of different phases of a movement caused the image to move. The illustration on the right below is from a booklet, "Every Boy His Own Toy-Maker" published by F. On the left in the row below is a clockwork toy thaumatrope called a New Mechanical Cinema. Arroz Caldo Recipe.

Arroz Caldo literally means warm rice. This Arroz Caldo Recipe is a type of congee that closely resembles risotto. It has been a favorite Filipino snack and is best eaten with tokwat baboy. Although Arroz Caldo is of Chinese origin, the name was actually given by the Spaniards because of pronunciation issues. You might be familiar with lugaw and goto. To make your arroz caldo look and taste better, try topping it with some safflower, toasted garlic, and scallions — squeeze half a lemon and you are done. I remember seeing several well-lit carts complete with chairs and tables along Edsa (a major road in Manila) serving this arroz caldo with Goto and lugaw. Try this delicious Arroz Caldo recipe and let me know what you think. Number of servings (yield): 6.

A skill like woodworking takes years and thousands of hours to become more than just a proficient at, but this man invested that time to be a certifiable master. His name is Randall Rosenthal and he has talent that can result in mind-bending illusions. The project in the gallery below all started with three pieces of white pine he glued together. What he turned that block of wood into is so cool. He glued the pieces of pine together as a base.

Once the adhesive cured, he was ready to begin carving the block. He slowly whittled it down into an interesting shape. It wasn’t uniform. The edges were jagged. Hmm…. This is where the project began looking like the final project: a cardboard box. By chipping away at the block of wood and hollowing out different sections, he was able to create the illusion that it was a box containing something. He spent hours carefully carving the sides to give the illusion of corrugated cardboard. The effect was incredible. Stunning. Source: sawmillcreek.org. Lomography Konstruktor review: the $35 camera you build yourself. As camera-makers trim their point-and-shoot lines in the face of encroaching smartphones, one company is keeping the faith and doing what it's done for the past three decades. Lomography's wide range of film cameras dates back to the early ‘90s, when some students in Vienna discovered the potential of the Russian LC-A, but shows no signs of slowing down — after all, if the company managed to survive the explosion of digital photography, phones are unlikely to be of much concern.

Lomography puts out a variety of cameras that work with just about any film format still in production, but its most recent product, the Konstruktor, is at once one of its most conventional and radical: it's a 35mm SLR, but one that you build yourself for $35. The Konstruktor is Lomography's first SLR, with a more complex design than most of its other offerings, and yet the company has entrusted its customers with the construction.

Construction Anyone can build this camera, Lomography says – but it's not easy. High Latitude Style | This blog features how to dress stylish in cold climate without freezing to hypothermia. Why Would Overseas NGOs Want International Volunteers? Do overseas NGOs really want international volunteers? Absolutely, according to new research by Dr. Erin Barnhart. Research conducted by Dr. Erin Barnhart examines the impact of international volunteers overseas—but rather than speaking with volunteer-sending organizations based in North America or Europe, she surveyed nearly 250 organizations in over 50 countries – organizations on the receiving end of international volunteerism.

We spoke with Dr Barnhart to learn more about the impact of international volunteers from the perspective of local host organizations. Verge Magazine: What inspired your research? Erin Barnhart: When I was first working on my dissertation, I was working for Idealist and we would get lots of questions from people saying, “Hey, I want to volunteer abroad. I was curious about what sort of research existed. In recent years, there’s been a lot of criticism towards international volunteers joining overseas projects. I can understand the criticism.
