Open Letter Leads to Peer Review Changes. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research will reverse some of the recent changes to its grant-reviewing processes after protests from researchers.
WIKIMEDIA, MAKARISTOSA June 27 open letter to Canada’s Minister of Health Jane Philpott, now signed by more than 1,300 researchers, led to an all-day meeting between Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) President Alain Beaudet and some 50 practicing scientists. In the end, Beaudet agreed to change the newly instituted online peer review structure to a hybrid system that will begin with an online culling process but sending the top 40 percent of proposals through to face-to-face meetings between reviewers and applicants, ScienceInsider reported. “Today is a day to rejoice,” said Beaudet, according to Science. “We’ve achieved something together.” Whether this agreement will pacify the scientific community remains to be seen. Paper on paper publishing is over.
Will papers on pre-print servers become the new gold standard for scientific publishing? Image–NYPL Digital Collections The primary job of a scientist is to discover knowledge and communicate it to the community. Unfortunately, while technology is enabling us to generate data faster and faster, the process of publishing that data seems to be slowing down. This was a major message of ASCB member Ron Vale’s recent rallying cry (first released on bioRxiv and eventually published in PNAS) that encourages biologists to use preprint servers to dramatically speed up communication of our work. Regardless of which server you use, there are three concerns that prevent most biologists from posting using preprints: Acceptance among scientists; “priority of discovery.” While the physical meeting will be small by necessity, we want everyone to be involved. What exactly do you mean by e-research or e-science and support services for it? Don’t we do that already? Well, yes and no. We have many types of support for research on the McGill campus, and we do it well. Yet we are increasingly understanding the production of scientific and other research output in digital form as a lifecycle that requires many different kinds of assistance along the way. The E-Science Institute provides for a broad definition of e-research, that “encompasses computational and e-science, cyberinfrastructure and data curation. And doing research has indeed become increasingly digital. This research lifecycle is ongoing and supported by many actors at different stages.
