Substantial equivalence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Substantial_equivalence Substantial equivalence is a concept, developed by OECD in 1991, that maintains that a novel food (for example, genetically modified foods ) should be considered the same as and as safe as a conventional food if it demonstrates the same characteristics and composition as the conventional food. Substantial equivalence is important from a regulatory point of view. If a novel food is substantially equivalent to its conventional counterpart, then it could be covered by the same regulatory framework as a conventional food. [ 1 ] The concept is used to determine whether a new food shares similar health and nutritional characteristics with an existing, familiar food with an established history of safe use.

The Principle of Substantial equivalence is Unscientific and Arbitary

Below is an excerpt from our published paper: Ho, M.W. and Steinbrecher, R. (1998). Fatal flaws in food safety assessment: critique of the joint FAO/WHO biotechnology and food safety report, Environmental & Nutritional Interactions 2, 51-84. We are reproducing the Section on the principle of substantial equivalence to show how rediculous it is. "Substantial equivalence embodies the concept that if a new food or food component is found to be substantially equivalent to an existing food or food component, it can be treated in the same manner with respect to safety (i.e., the food or food component can be concluded to be as safe as the conventional food or food component)" (Joint FAO/WHO Biotechnology and Food Safety Report, 1996, p. 4)

World renowned scientist lost his job when he warned about GE foods - The Pusztai case

Dr Arpad Pusztai evoked world wide media attention in August 1998, when he said in British TV that he would not eat genetically engineered food because of the insufficient testing procedures they have undergone. Pusztai is a world renowned expert on food safety, who worked at UK's leading food safety research lab, the Rowett institute. His statement obviously threatened to damage the then ongoing multimillion PR campaign of the Biotech industry to create public confidence in GE foods. A few days after his public appearance he was suspended and gagged by the research institute where he worked. Pointed out weakness in present food regulations
Approaching our centenary in 2013, The Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health undertakes research to address some of the most compelling contemporary problems in nutrition. Our research contributes not only to new scientific knowledge, but also to new understanding to underpin Government policies and to inform innovation for industry leading to increased economic growth. Download the latest Institute leaflet As part of the University of Aberdeen since 2008, the Institute has a strong platform upon which to tackle these problems, because of the broad base of expertise and skills from which the Institute can draw. World in Action was a British investigative current affairs programme made by Granada Television from 1963 until 1998 . Its campaigning journalism frequently had a major impact on events of the day. Its production teams often took audacious risks and gained a solid reputation for its often unorthodox, some said left-wing, approach. Cabinet ministers fell victim to its probings.

onsanto fully supports research by the public sector research community with commercial products and fully endorses comparisons with competitors’ commercial products. In June 2009, corn entomologists from public universities and the U.S. government met with representatives of the country’s seed companies – including Monsanto – in Ames, Iowa. The topic of the meeting, coordinated by the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), was academic research; specifically, how to strike a balance between the seed companies’ desire for well-designed scientific studies and the public scientists’ desire to conduct hassle-free research on transgenic seed. The ensuing discussion led to the development of a set of principles that we hope will bring a better understanding of the companies’ commitment to and support of wide-ranging research with GM crops. The issue of academic research first gained major media attention in February 2009.
