*****Stats, Maps n Pix: What Percent Golf Course is Your Area?

I've been working on a related topic recently, so when Ordnance Survey last week released an open dataset containing golf course coverage I thought I'd have a go at answering the question myself. The answer I arrived at was that Great Britain is about 0.54% golf course - or about 1,256 square kilometres (about the same area as the whole of Greater Manchester). The local authority with the largest area of golf courses is Woking in Surrey, at 10.74%. I originally calculated it at just over 7% but I had to make some edits due to the number of courses that straddle the local authority boundary and weren't being included.

I've done the calculation a couple of times and also manually so I'm sure it's pretty accurate. Why am I doing this? I've also done some summary statistics for Great Britain and the different countries within it. #Map shows naming convention of currencies. Article explains how they were named. The maps, produced at the University of Exeter in collaboration with the Met Office, may help acute hay fever or asthma sufferers decide where to live or which areas to avoid at peak times when pollen is released. The study records areas where plants which hay fever sufferers are most likely to be sensitive to are most prevalent, including grasses, trees and plants such as birch, alder, oak and nettle.

*****To Map A Mockinbird (To Kill Mockingbird)

Told from the naive perspective of a small girl, this tale of institutionalised racism in a small Southern town in the 1930s still resonates in today's America — and beyond. First published in 1960, it has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. In 2009, Mockingbird was voted "most inspirational book ever," beating the Bible into second place. The story is set in Maycomb, a fictionalised version of author Harper Lee's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. Maycomb is not on any map of the real world, but that doesn't mean it can't be mapped.

Artist Judy Horacek, who illustrated Mem Fox's children's classic Where is the Green Sheep? , approved of the idea. Globalization – a phenomenon that has defined the world's economy in recent decades – is under pressure. As Donald Trump prepares for his tenure in the White House, he talks of dismantling a whole history of globalized trade that he sees as having had a catastrophic effect on the global economy. His strategy so far has involved tearing up established trade agreements, such as NAFTA, and burying others that are yet to get off the ground. One of these is the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which he has slammed as “a potential disaster for our country”. The incoming president's pledge to "make America great again" is based partly on challenging countries such as China by limiting imports and boosting exports.

Spread of the Words For Tea Around the World - Faultlines, black holes and glaciers: mapping uncharted territories. On a quiet summer evening, the Aurora, a 60ft cutter-rigged sloop, approaches the craggy shore of eastern Greenland, along what is known as the Forbidden Coast. Its captain, Sigurdur Jonsson, a sturdy man in his 50s, stands carefully watching his charts.

The waters he is entering have been described in navigation books as among “the most difficult in Greenland; the mountains rise almost vertically from the sea to form a narrow bulwark, with rifts through which active glaciers discharge quantities of ice, while numerous off-lying islets and rocks make navigation hazardous”. The sloop is single-masted, painted a cheery, cherry red. Icebergs float in ominous silence. Where Jonsson, who goes by Captain Siggi, sails, he is one of few to have ever gone. A naval architect turned explorer, Siggi navigates by scanning aerial photos and uploading them into a plotter, the ship’s electronic navigation system. Then again, a map is both latitude and longitude. What if you look at each dimension individually? Heck, let’s just try it. I did this by, essentially, drawing maps and counting pixels, then collapsing all those pixels against an axis. For latitude, an equal-area projection with even spacing between parallels so that the axis has a consistent scale of degrees: sinusoidal. And similarly, for longitude, one with even spacing between meridians: a cylindrical equal-area projection, Gall-Peters. I’m not sure what there is to gain from these quasi-maps.
