MOOC – Diversity and Community in Online Learning

In this presentation I outline the major elelements of a connectivist MOOC, with particular intention to distinguish it from other models of MOOCs, and to make the point that assesssments of quality and effectiveness should be related to the goal of the MOOC model we developed. In addition, in this presentation I address the subjects of diversity and community, and explain why a MOOC should not be thought of as the same thing as a community.

New Online Learning Opportunities through “FutureLearn”

The FutureLearn initiative, endorsed by the Third Age Trust, offers a diverse selection of free, high quality online courses over the Internet to audiences across the world. Horsley U3A members have already completed several courses and you can read their reviews of courses on Cyber Security ("Essential cyber security knowledge and skills that help protect your digital life"), Astronomy ("Moons of the Solar system”), Psychology (“Good Brain, Bad Brain"), Forensic Science and Criminal Justice ("Sleuth School"), and the Environment and Sustainability ("Global Food Security") here. FutureLearn courses are currently free to participants. Teaching materials (articles, presentations, and short videos) are displayed on the FutureLearn website, and participants use email, web logs (blogs) and discussion forums to interact with the course tutors and discuss topics with fellow participants.

I did some research this morning that I think is broadly applicable so I figure I would share it widely. You might want to read as background the following 2014 blog post from Many Sporny who is one of the architects of JSON-LD: The Invisible Learners Taking MOOCs. “Anyone, anywhere, at any point in time will be able to take advantage of high quality education.” That could be a tagline from just about any enthusiast or provider of open online courses (often called MOOCs). The intention certainly seems laudable and, if not transformational, at least desirable.

And that extra carbon takes a long time to drain out of the tub. A fundamental human flaw, says John Sterman, impedes action on global warming. Sterman is not talking about greed, selfishness, or some other vice.

He’s talking about a cognitive limitation, “an important and pervasive problem in human reasoning” that he has documented by testing graduate students at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
