Contaminating the Subject of Global Education was published early this year. I bought the book soon after it was published but have only this summer got round to reading it. It’s a pity that this is not an open access e-book, which might have received more immediate attention and discussion.
I think it does deserve to be discussed since Knox questions whether MOOCs really have been revolutionary and disruptive saying in the introduction, ‘MOOCs have emerged simply as the latest in a long and established line of educational endeavours premised on the nurturing and refinement of a particular kind of human being: one that thinks in a reasoned way; has a natural capacity for independence; and which shares these exclusive traits with all others assumed to be of the same species’(p.2). The Invisible Learners Taking MOOCs | Higher Ed Beta. “Anyone, anywhere, at any point in time will be able to take advantage of high quality education.” That could be a tagline from just about any enthusiast or provider of open online courses (often called MOOCs). The intention certainly seems laudable and, if not transformational, at least desirable.
What are the caveats? Recent research suggests that the majority of people enrolled in these open online courses are highly educated. And yet, despite the extensive research and data on open online courses, we really do not know much about these millions of learners engaged in everything from courses on computer science to poetry to physiotherapy to gender studies to bioinformatics. And thus, my fellow researchers and I are asking more questions. We are currently in the midst of conducting the largest series of interview studies in open courses. So far we have interviewed more than 70 individuals who have completed a range of MOOCs. Successful online learners have sophisticated study skills. Kiron - Study. Specialization. The Big Idea — The Carbon Bathtub. It’s simple, really: As long as we pour CO2; into the atmosphere faster than nature drains it out, the planet warms.
And that extra carbon takes a long time to drain out of the tub. A fundamental human flaw, says John Sterman, impedes action on global warming. Sterman is not talking about greed, selfishness, or some other vice. He’s talking about a cognitive limitation, “an important and pervasive problem in human reasoning” that he has documented by testing graduate students at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Plants, oceans, and rocks all drain carbon from the atmosphere, but as climatologist David Archer explains in his book The Long Thaw, those drains are slow. Most of Sterman’s students—and his results have been replicated at other universities—didn’t understand that, at least not when the problem was described in the usual climate jargon.
