MOOC – Diversity and Community in Online Learning. 26e Entretiens Jacques Cartier, Lyon, France, Centre Jacques Cartier. In this presentation I outline the major elelements of a connectivist MOOC, with particular intention to distinguish it from other models of MOOCs, and to make the point that assesssments of quality and effectiveness should be related to the goal of the MOOC model we developed. In addition, in this presentation I address the subjects of diversity and community, and explain why a MOOC should not be thought of as the same thing as a community. Additionally, there was a panel discussion, mostly in French, but with contributuons in English from myself - click here for the audio of the panel. Contaminating the Subject of Global Education was published early this year. I bought the book soon after it was published but have only this summer got round to reading it. It’s a pity that this is not an open access e-book, which might have received more immediate attention and discussion.

I think it does deserve to be discussed since Knox questions whether MOOCs really have been revolutionary and disruptive saying in the introduction, ‘MOOCs have emerged simply as the latest in a long and established line of educational endeavours premised on the nurturing and refinement of a particular kind of human being: one that thinks in a reasoned way; has a natural capacity for independence; and which shares these exclusive traits with all others assumed to be of the same species’(p.2). The problems with these assumptions are explored through Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the book, in which he develops the following arguments. Competencia Digital - Formación para Docentes.

I am still arguing fiercely with some of my enterprise architect friends whether we should use JSON or JSON-LD to define our APIs.

I did some research this morning that I think is broadly applicable so I figure I would share it widely. You might want to read as background the following 2014 blog post from Many Sporny who is one of the architects of JSON-LD: Here are a few quotes: I’ve heard many people say that JSON-LD is primarily about the Semantic Web, but I disagree, it’s not about that at all. JSON-LD was created for Web Developers that are working with data that is important to other people and must interoperate across the Web. TL;DR: The desire for better Web APIs is what motivated the creation of JSON-LD, not the Semantic Web. In the vein of Manu’s TL;DR: above I will add my own TL;DR for this post: TL;DR: Using unconstrained JSON-LD to define an API is a colossal mistake. This code uses the JSON-LD PHP library from Manu Sporny at:

The Invisible Learners Taking MOOCs | Higher Ed Beta. “Anyone, anywhere, at any point in time will be able to take advantage of high quality education.” That could be a tagline from just about any enthusiast or provider of open online courses (often called MOOCs). The intention certainly seems laudable and, if not transformational, at least desirable.

What are the caveats? Recent research suggests that the majority of people enrolled in these open online courses are highly educated. And yet, despite the extensive research and data on open online courses, we really do not know much about these millions of learners engaged in everything from courses on computer science to poetry to physiotherapy to gender studies to bioinformatics. And thus, my fellow researchers and I are asking more questions. We are currently in the midst of conducting the largest series of interview studies in open courses. So far we have interviewed more than 70 individuals who have completed a range of MOOCs. Successful online learners have sophisticated study skills. Kiron - Study. Specialization. The Big Idea — The Carbon Bathtub. It’s simple, really: As long as we pour CO2; into the atmosphere faster than nature drains it out, the planet warms.

And that extra carbon takes a long time to drain out of the tub. A fundamental human flaw, says John Sterman, impedes action on global warming. Sterman is not talking about greed, selfishness, or some other vice. He’s talking about a cognitive limitation, “an important and pervasive problem in human reasoning” that he has documented by testing graduate students at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Plants, oceans, and rocks all drain carbon from the atmosphere, but as climatologist David Archer explains in his book The Long Thaw, those drains are slow. Most of Sterman’s students—and his results have been replicated at other universities—didn’t understand that, at least not when the problem was described in the usual climate jargon.

Crash Course is a channel on YouTube that covers 7 course topics in a series of weekly videos. Some of the video series have been running for 2 years at this point. The topics covered are: PsychologyLiteratureChemistryUS HistoryEcologyBiology The videos are created by two brothers, and are well-produced with sound effects and animation to reinforce the points being made. The average about 10 minutes in length each, and so they break down each topic into bite-sized chunks. According to their website (, CrashCourse started as a grant from Youtube itself, and has grown to be a self-sustaining subscription service.

Members pay almost $25,000 per month now for some interesting perks, even though the content is free for anyone to enjoy. Compared with a traditional college course site such as Coursera, Crash Course provides their courses in video-only format. The Crash Course videos seem fast-paced to me. The animation is slick and helpful.
