Ptolemy Map of the World (via Wikimedia Commons) One question often asked when deciding to build a world for a game or novel (but especially games) is: Where to start? Usually this question is asked or steered in the direction of creating a map. Therefore popular opinion falls into two camps: Top-down: start by drawing a large scale map of the world or a continent and then add detail through smaller scale maps as needed.Bottom-up: start by drawing a small area which is important to the beginning of the story/campaign and draw larger scale maps or other small area maps as needed.

Both approaches are often wrong. You will get a better result if you start where you have the best ideas for the campaign/story! For example, if your story or planned campaign centers around a war of the gods, then maybe you should start by fleshing out your pantheon and let it drive your world’s timeline/history and geography and cultures. Finally, what if you make a mistake? Inkwell Ideas. RPTools - Home. What is Character Development? I remember back when cameras had something inside them called film that you had to get developed. For those of you college-aged or younger, that’s where a technician would treat the film with some chemicals inside a mysterious darkened room, and an image would magically appear on the special paper.

But if the process went awry, you could end up with an underdeveloped image that was dark or fuzzy, or one that was over-exposed and therefore too washed out to see clearly. The key to getting a crisp clear photograph largely depended on how the technician developed the film. If we want readers to have a vibrant mental image of our characters, we have to spend some time in the dark room. GIVEAWAY: Tom is excited to give away a free copy of his novel to a random commenter. Phat Loot and Neurotransmitters in World of Warcraft. How are loot-based games like World of Warcraft, Torchlight, and Borderlands related to slot machines, chemical bliss, and evolution? Read on for the answer. During my early days with World of Warcraft (WoW) I remember tromping through Westfall killing crowds of Defias bandits when I was shocked by a loot drop: a rare pair of “blue” gloves that perfectly fit my class’s needs at the time. For those of you who don’t know, killing enemies in WoW gives you a random chance at one or more pieces armor, weapons, or other items called “loot” in WoW parlance. These are stratified according their text’s color: gray, white, green, blue, purple, and orange in order of increasing quality.

Other games do this, too. Which of these do you think would create a bigger dopamine neuron freakout if it dropped in front of you? To answer that question, let’s consider slot machines and a type of brain cell called “dopamine neurons.” But this is only part of what makes loot-based games work so well. Better RPG Tools (PFRPG d20) by Chance Wees. First a little history: PFRPG is an off-shoot of that ever-classic Pen and Paper RPG, Dungeons and Dragons. Its rules are included in the Open Gaming License (which allows me to make this game app). PFRPG is basically D&D version 3.75, which was made by fans of D&D 3.5 for fans of D&D 3.5 when Wizards of the Coast abandoned that system and made D&D 4. Now PFRPG is so popular that many to assume it is now more popular than D&D itself. *Update* Two new Skins added! Enjoy! *Update* After some consideration I am now going to allow users to contribute towards support for d20 3.5 and D&D 4th edition support. This project is brought to you by my own frustration. Most D&D players say nothing beats good old pen and paper for character sheets, but I think its just because nothing really usable exists as an alternative.

So there were my criteria: Usable Modern Effective Can be used on a tablet/phone Throw in user customization and you have the game app I intend to release, and to release soon! If you check out Obsidian Portal on your mobile device, you may get a bit of a shock. Instead of just being the regular site scrunched up onto the screen, you’ll see that it now fits nicely with no zooming and scrolling. We’ve heard your calls for a better mobile version and now we’re getting there. Rather than recreate the entire site, we tried to focus on the core elements of what you need at the table to run a session. With the mobile site, you have easy access to everything in your campaign.

On the flip side, while we recognize the need to be able to edit and update things on the fly, we didn’t focus on this too much. At the core, the mobile site is about allowing you to carry your campaigns around in your pocket. One thing every mobile site needs is the ability for people to avoid it. There will surely be bugs, or at least inconsistencies with the mobile site. As with everything, there is still more to come. Article (Inn Generator) F rom Dragon Magazine #418: You’ve spent hours on the perfect dungeon, your monsters are all particularly devious and cleverly placed, and your adventure plot is practically Shakespearean in its genius. You’ve thought of everything. Your players are eager to see what you’ve come up with. The first order of the session is to have the characters meet, and nowhere in the D&D cosmos do chance meetings that lead to adventures occur more often than at the inn.

Everything goes well, the characters have agreed to the task at hand, and then a player asks, “What’s good to eat here?” A seemingly inconsequential detail causes the game to crash to a halt. Never mind your perfectly awesome plot and masterfully crafted monster stat blocks—you didn’t go to the trouble of coming up with any details about the place where the characters met to begin their adventure. In the Beginning: 101 Questions to Help Create Character Backgrounds and Personalities. A character needs to be more than just a few scores and abilities and possessions. There are so many ways to make your character more memorable and most of them don’t take much time. Below is a list of 101 things to consider when creating a character. You certainly don’t need to answer all or even half of them to make a character more interesting. Just answer a few that seem most pertinent and you’ll have a much more interesting character. Yes, there are two lists that add up to only 51, but many questions have follow-ups. (If you have ideas for more, please post a comment!) Simply skim the list and if any point gives you an idea for something about your character, jot it down. Personality Is the character generally approachable or does he keep to himself?

Background Why was the character given the name he has? What am I missing? Character Development: Creative Writing. Print version Characters are the most important component of any narrative. Without them, there would be no story. Character development is an important skill to master because characters are important parts of any creative writing from books and short stories, from biographies and autobiographies, to poetry.

The development of a character is a very detailed process, and one that requires a lot of thought. According to Candace Schaefer and Rick Diamond (The Creative Writer. Physical Details about the character: Is he/she short, tall, thin, old, etc? Schaefer and Diamond also state that character development is more effective when the author reveals traits about the character through the ways mentioned above and allows the reader to make his/her own judgments, rather than stating character traits directly. Option 2 is a more effective approach because it allows the readers to form judgments about the young boy themselves, rather than simply accepting the author’s word for it. Trackbacks.
