The aim of these resources is to assist teachers who are charged with the important task of providing their students with an understanding of the nature of the traditional lives of our First Peoples and their contact with White Australia with confidence. This guide aims to provide insights and materials to assist teachers without a background in history to address what can be suggested as the little known history around first contact and the conflicts that occurred across Australia between those living in Australia and those coming to Australia from the 1770’s. It is inspired by the research work of Henry Reynolds, the acclaimed historian and many others working for social justice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

But why do we mark it on that day in particular? To answer that question, Sarah will take you back in time to 1788, to meet some kids who came to Australia on the First Fleet. Kid 1: “My name is John Hudson and I'm nine years old. I've been an orphan ever since I can remember and I made a living sweeping chimneys. It was horrible work, dangerous too. Kid 2: “For the theft of one linen shirt, value 10 shillings, five silk stockings, value 5 shillings, one pistol, value 5 shillings, and two aprons, value 2 shillings. Kid 3: “My name is Elizabeth Haywood and I'm 13 years old. Kid 2: “For the theft of one linen gown, value 4 shillings, a silk bonnet value 2 shillings, and a bath cloth cloak, value 1 shilling. In London in the 1700s, gaols were full of people like Elizabeth and John; poor, hungry, unwanted. Reporter: England's laws were really, really harsh. One solution was transportation. The first eleven of these ships are today known as the First Fleet and contained the convicts and marines that are now acknowledged as the Founders of Australia. This is their story. Captain James Cook discovered the east coast of New Holland in 1770 and named it New South Wales. He sailed the whole of the coast and reported to the British government that he thought it would make a good place for a settlement. The agricultural revolution in Britain, and the population explosion in the cities, resulted in an increase in crime. With this in mind, the British Government hired 9 ships and set about provisioning them, together with 2 Naval vessels, with enough supplies to keep the 759 convicts, their Marine guards, some with families, and a few civil officers, until they became self-sufficient.

Although most of the convicts were English, there were also African, American and French convicts. Conditions were crowded and cramped for the convicts who were housed, for long periods of time, behind bars and often chained. For parts of the journey conditions below decks were hot and humid.
