A Brief History of Decision Support Systems

J. Power Editor, DSSResources.COM version 4.1 or see version 2.8 see version 4.1 in Spanish translated by Maria Ramos Summary Information Systems researchers and technologists have built and investigated computerized Decision Support Systems (DSS) for approximately 40 years. I. Computerized decision support systems became practical with the development of minicomputers, timeshare operating systems and distributed computing. This hypertext document is a starting point in explaining the origins of the various technology threads that are converging to provide integrated support for managers working alone, in teams and in organization hierarchies to manage organizations and make more rational decisions. The study of decision support systems is an applied discipline that uses knowledge and especially theory from other disciplines. The next section describes the origins of the field of decision support systems. As We May Think - Magazine.

As We May Think - Magazine

Vannevar Bush has coordinated the activities of some six thousand leading American scientists in the application of science to warfare. In this significant article he holds up an incentive for scientists when the fighting has ceased. He urges that men of science should then turn to the massive task of making more accessible our bewildering store of knowledge. For years inventions have extended man's physical powers rather than the powers of his mind. Trip hammers that multiply the fists, microscopes that sharpen the eye, and engines of destruction and detection are new results, but not the end results, of modern science. This has not been a scientist's war; it has been a war in which all have had a part. For the biologists, and particularly for the medical scientists, there can be little indecision, for their war has hardly required them to leave the old paths.

Personal Information Management. Luhmann's Zettelkasten. Index cards played a large role in research during the last century -- the 20th century, that is.

Luhmann's Zettelkasten

And there is still a great deal of interest in using index cards as a means for organizing one's daily life. See, for instance, Index Cards, More Index Cards, Photos, or any number of other sites that are fascinated by paper or "analog devices," as they are sometimes referred to by geeks in this time when electronic devices take over more and more of our lives. But index cards clearly also were the model for important early programs intended for what is by some called with the unfortunate phrase "personal knowledge management" today.

I mean such programs as NoteCard, HyperCard, and their successors, which began from the index- or note-card metaphor. One of the more interesting systems for keeping such index cards was developed by the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann (1927-1998). Zettelkasten : Zettelkasten von Daniel Luedecke. Untitled. Competition among memes in a world with limited attention : Scientific Reports. Here we outline a number of empirical findings that motivate both our question and the main assumptions behind our model.

Competition among memes in a world with limited attention : Scientific Reports

We then describe the proposed agent-based toy model of meme diffusion and compare its predictions with the empirical data. Finally we show that the social network structure and our finite attention are both key ingredients of the diffusion model, as their removal leads to results inconsistent with the empirical data. We validate our model with data from Twitter, a micro-blogging platform that allows many millions of people to broadcast short messages through social connections. Identifying the Pathways for Meaning Circulation using Text Network Analysis

Published October 2011, Berlin. Polysingularity of Text Expressions. Italo Calvino once said that “writing is essentially a combinatorial exercise” and that “reading is a way of exercising the potentialities contained in the system of signs” (Calvino 1985).

Polysingularity of Text Expressions

Text, therefore, is not merely a sequence of words that produce a meaning. It’s an actualization of a certain possibilities within our cognitive dynamics, which have the intention of expressing themselves. Using our method for text network analysis (Paranyushkin 2011a, 2011b), Alexis Jacomy’s GexfWalker and Gephi (Bastian et al 2009), we created graph visualizations of several seminal texts that allow you to explore their polysingularity.

The words are the nodes and their proximity relates to the strength of connections between them. Thus, the original combinatorial structure of the text is inscribed into these graphs, but you exercise their polysingularity in many more ways than the standard sequential writing proposes.
