How the Mid-Victorians Worked, Ate and Died. Atmospheric Science, Peter V. Hobbs & John Michael Wallace. Wallace and Hobbs' original edition of Atmospheric Science helped define the field nearly 30 years ago, and has served as the cornerstone for most university curriculums.

Now students and professionals alike can use this updated classic to understand atmospheric phenomena in the context of the latest discoveries and technologies, and prepare themselves for more advanced study and real-life problem solving. Atmospheric Science, Second Edition , has been completely revamped in terms of content and appearance. It contains new chapters on atmospheric chemistry, the Earth system, climate, and the atmospheric boundary layer, as well as enhanced treatment of atmospheric dynamics, weather forecasting, radiative transfer, severe storms, and human impacts, such as global warming. Measuring the Evolution of Contemporary Western Popular Music : Scientific Reports.

To identify structural patterns of musical discourse we first need to build a ‘vocabulary’ of musical elements (Fig. 1).

To do so, we encode the dataset descriptions by a discretization of their values, yielding what we call music codewords20 (see Supplementary Information, SI). In the case of pitch, the descriptions of each song are additionally transposed to an equivalent main tonality, such that all of them are automatically considered within the same tonal context or key. Next, to quantify long-term variations of a vocabulary, we need to obtain samples of it at different periods of time. For that we perform a Monte Carlo sampling in a moving window fashion. The Perceptual Cues that Reshape Expert Reasoning : Scientific Reports. When chess grandmasters glance at a game they simply ‘get it’, not only do they choose better moves than lesser players but often these moves occur to them within seconds of first looking at a game1, long before they have an opportunity for detailed search and analysis.

How are they able to do this? Research on expertise highlights several key aspects. In games like chess, a high IQ is not necessary2 but at least 10,000 hours3 of training is vital. Over this time 300,000 or more chunks4, small frequently occurring patterns, will be learned. This learning process will be non-linear: there will be times when skill plateaus5 and sharp transitional points need to be negotiated6. The Higgs boson and the future of science. Philip Anderson: Anderson first described the so-called Higgs mechanism and also fired the first modern salvo against strong reductionism (Image: Celeblist) The discovery of the Higgs boson (or the “Higgs-like particle” if you prefer) is without a doubt one of the signal scientific achievements of our time.

The Higgs boson and the future of science

It illustrates what sheer thought – aided by data of course – can reveal about the workings of the universe and it continues a trend that lists Descartes, Hume, Galileo and Newton among its illustrious forebears. From sliding objects down an incline to smashing atoms at almost the speed of light in a 27 kilometer tunnel, we have come a long way. Dissecting our origins and the universe around us scarcely gets any better than this. Yet even as the exciting discovery was being announced, I could not help but think about what the Higgs does not do for us.
