Master plan for Sejong City unveiled

Prime Minister Chung Un-Chan announced the Master Plan for the Development of Sejong City today, following two months of discussions by the Joint Committee comprised of specialists and officials from both the public and private sector. The Sejong City Master Plan specified several important points. The Government will increase the percentage of the city land needed for development to ensure that the city is self-sufficient.

The original plan to build a multifunctional administrative city will be altered to construct an economic hub for science and education—the city will be reshaped into a center of industries, universities and research institutions that are conducive to creating jobs and wealth. Finally, instead of pursuing the original phased development schedule until 2030, the Sejong City project will be completed by 2020 following an accelerated and intensive development schedule. Government begins moving into Sejong City

Sejong City, some 150 kilometers south of Seoul, came officially into being as a "special autonomous city" in July and will be home to 16 central government ministries and offices as well as 20 subsidiary organizations currently located in or near Seoul. The move to be completed by 2014 involves relocating some 10,000 government officials to the new city. The project, first put forward by former President Roh Moo-hyun in 2002, aims to promote balanced regional development and ease overpopulation in Seoul and nearby regions, where a fifth of the country's population of 50 million resides.
