SPEAK - if you see something, say something - Sara Bruun.

We are outspoken about our optimism. These days, though, optimism seems to be in short supply. The headlines are filled with awful news. Every day brings a different story of political division, violence, or natural disaster. Despite the headlines, we see a world that’s getting better. Compare today to the way things were a decade or a century ago. But being an optimist isn’t about knowing that life used to be worse. That’s our response when people ask, “How can you be so optimistic?”

This is our 10th Annual Letter, and we’re marking the occasion by answering 10 tough questions that people ask us. Tough Question #1 Why don’t you give more in the United States? Melinda: Our foundation spends about $500 million a year in the United States, most of it on education. We don’t compare different people’s suffering.

Take vaccines. We’ve spent $15.3 billion on vaccines over the past 18 years. Bill: We’ve been looking at how we might expand our work in the U.S. beyond education. Tough Question #2. Welcome to Lit2Go ETC. Oprah Winfrey's Golden Globes Speech Full Transcript - Oprah Winfrey Gave a Powerful Speech at the Golden Globes. Oprah Winfrey was the recipient of the Golden Globes' annual Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement, and gave a powerful acceptance speech during Sunday night's ceremony. She was introduced by Reese Witherspoon, who compared their time together on the set of A Wrinkle in Time to a master class at Harvard Business School and a spiritual retreat all in one.

"Oprah's hugs could end wars, solve world peace," Witherspoon joked. Oprah Winfrey - does speech provide clues about presidential run?

Image copyright Getty Images During the opening of the 2018 Golden Globe Awards programme, host Seth Meyers toyed with the idea of a possible Oprah Winfrey presidential campaign. When Winfrey took the stage later that night, the speech she gave was no joke. There are reports emerging in the US that she is actively entertaining the notion. And her speech sounded an awful lot like a presidential candidate on the campaign stump - polished and effective. Here are a few reasons why. Personal touch "In 1964, I was a little girl sitting on the linoleum floor of my mother's house in Milwaukee, watching Anne Bancroft present the Oscar for best actor at the 36th Academy Awards. Authenticity has become a buzzword in American politics of late, ever since Donald Trump skewered a field of polished politicians on his way to the White House in 2016. 10 moments that made Oprah Winfrey Media playback is unsupported on your device Statement of purpose Mr Trump campaigned on his own version.

Daily News ⋆ Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? - The Atlantic. One day last summer, around noon, I called Athena, a 13-year-old who lives in Houston, Texas. She answered her phone—she’s had an iPhone since she was 11—sounding as if she’d just woken up. We chatted about her favorite songs and TV shows, and I asked her what she likes to do with her friends. “We go to the mall,” she said. “Do your parents drop you off? ,” I asked, recalling my own middle-school days, in the 1980s, when I’d enjoy a few parent-free hours shopping with my friends.

Those mall trips are infrequent—about once a month. I’ve been researching generational differences for 25 years, starting when I was a 22-year-old doctoral student in psychology. Around 2012, I noticed abrupt shifts in teen behaviors and emotional states. At first I presumed these might be blips, but the trends persisted, across several years and a series of national surveys. What happened in 2012 to cause such dramatic shifts in behavior? Today’s teens are also less likely to date. So is depression. See Plans. 'The Egg' - Andy Weir. You were on your way home when you died. It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. And that’s when you met me. “What… what happened?” “You died,” I said, matter-of-factly.

“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…” “Yup,” I said. “I… I died?” “Yup. You looked around. “More or less,” I said. “Are you God?” “Yup,” I replied. What lies within the nothingness? “My kids… my wife,” you said. “What about them?” “Will they be all right?” “That’s what I like to see,” I said. You looked at me with fascination. “Don’t worry,” I said. “Oh,” you said. “Neither,” I said. “Ah,” you said. “All religions are right in their own way,” I said. Are we all just souls reincarnating? You followed along as we strode through the void. “Nowhere in particular,” I said. “So what’s the point, then?” “Not so!” I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Oh lots. Ny ledtråd i Bruce Lees mystiska död | Nöje.

It's almost a cliche at this point to say that teen fiction isn't just for teens anymore. Just last year, the Association of American Publishers ranked Children's/Young Adult books as the single fastest-growing publishing category. Which is why we were only a little surprised to see the tremendous response that came in for this summer's Best-Ever Teen Fiction poll. A whopping 75,220 of you voted for your favorite young adult novels, blasting past the total for last year's science fiction and fantasy poll at, dare we say it, warp speed. And now, the final results are in.

Selecting a manageable voting roster from among the more than 1,200 nominations that came in from readers wasn't easy, and we were happy to be able to rely on such an experienced panel of judges. We were all taught about basic hygiene by our parents, from brushing our teeth to maintaining our body hair, whether on our head, face, back, or anywhere else. In fact, we live in a world where good hygiene is a huge priority, as evidenced by the endless rows of shampoos, face masks, razors, and perfumes in our favorite stores.

No matter who you are, the basics are always there—showering, combing your hair, brushing your teeth—but everyone has their own special twist on their daily routine. For girls, it might be a full face of makeup or a spritz of dry shampoo every other day. For guys, maybe it's a fresh shave every single morning or finally remembering to use deodorant on a daily basis. Regardless of what each of us to do to prepare for the day, these routines are what we use to prepare ourselves to enter the world, and how others in it perceive us. 1.
