Aug. 11, 2011 — Second graders who read aloud to a canine over the summer seem to maintain their reading skills during the dog days of summer, according to a pilot study published August 10 by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. In the study, published in a whitepaper on the school's website, second-grade students with a range of reading aptitudes and attitudes toward reading were paired with dogs -- or people -- and asked to read aloud to them once a week for 30 minutes in the summer of 2010. At the end of the program, students who read to the dogs experienced a slight gain in their reading ability and improvement in their attitudes toward reading, as measured on the Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) and Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS), respectively -- while those who read to people experienced a decrease on both measures. Another surprising result was the high rate of attrition among students in the control group.

This is a work in progress, I'm working on it throughout this year. Hopefully I'll have it filled by the end of the year. Sometimes I'll work on a few pages at once, sometimes nothing for a week or so. UPDATE: Well, it took me a little longer, but it's all finished!
So what is SteamPunk you ask?????? This is a book created by my Local Round Robin. I came up with an idea to work on and finish an entire book in one month. A brand new Round Robin concept & experience for this group. Generally we all have our own books and pass books to each person each month. Then in 10 months you have a complete book.
Looking for ideas for making an altered board book? Do you remember board books from your childhood? Perhaps your own children had, or possibly still have, a few of them? These sturdy and often colourful books for the very young still seem to be quite popular, and you may well be able to find some in your local charity shop (thrift shop).

As an MA reading specialist and English-language Arts teacher, I know the value of diagnostic assessments. No two students are exactly alike. Each has different instructional needs. Each requires instruction adjusted to those needs. We could easily spend the entire school year assessing these needs via individual reading inventories or running records without spending one moment on instruction!
