Language teaching is seen as an adaptive process rather than as the application of an ideal method or approach. In contexts that seem to require or favour the learning of actual abilities to use a language, it is useful for a teacher to develop a repertoire of holistic activities within which a variety of approaches may be adopted. A teacher's repertoire often includes activities such as simulated conversations in pairs and small groups, speech making or story telling. All of these holistic activities act as a framework for the adoption of different approaches and roles, ranging from strictly and centrally controlled teacher-fronted interaction to devolved interaction in which students structure their own discourse.

July 2, 2013. “Your One Word” Seems Like A Pretty Useful Idea For A Lesson. I’m a big fan of Dan Pink’s “One Sentence Project” (see The Best Resources For Doing A “One-Sentence Project”). In that lesson idea, students develop a…sentence that the want people to say about them forty or fifty years in the future. I do it every year and it’s always very engaging and helpful. Today, I learned about a similar idea that I think would be an excellent complement to the One-Sentence lesson. It’s called “Your One Word.” The idea is that you choose one word that can sort of be your lodestone in life.
That’s the only story, I think, that I’d share with the students as part of this lesson (the other stories are more marketing-related). One thing that makes the general idea even better is that the video provides a three-step process to develop your word, and I think a teacher can pretty much take that process and use it right in a classroom. Google Slides: Choose Your Own Adventure - Teacher Tech. Eric Curts posted directions for using Google Slides to create a choose your own adventure style activity. Using hyperlinks within a Google Slides presentation, build a story or tutorial that asks the viewer to make decisions. Google Slides is probably my favorite collaboration tool. How many educators really know their students? Perhaps when you are teaching classes of 20+ learners, are swamped with administrative duties which eat away at the time that could be spent preparing lessons, when teachers are demanded to be everything to all, it's not realistically possible to really know one's students beyond their names and perhaps, their grades. So let me start again, how well do your students know each other? A regular activity when teaching Business English is to ask students to write out their CV for a possible role play (a role play focusing on interview skills, for instance, or writing application/covering letters for a job).
Today, there are digital tools which enable this quite easily, adding visuals and easy sharing among social media. These tools not only offer a real world practice to learners but also help them to learn about each other, thus opening opportunities of better class dynamics and ways of collaboration with each other. They will work on projects in teams, they will present their projects and they will need to be more confident in front of an audience. Thus, as teachers we can encourage our students to speak in front of an audience by assigning weekly projects. Friday afternoons can be a great time for doing this as on the last day of the week they feel tired and demotivated. You can find a lovely box, or a jar and put the project ideas in and ask them to choose the one for the next week.
