National Science Digital Library. Welcome to the BEN portal, the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Pathway for biological sciences education.
The BEN Portal provides access to education resources from BEN Collaborators and is managed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Over 18,482 reviewed resources covering 77 biological sciences topics are available. BEN resources can help you engage student interest, shorten lesson preparation time, provide concept updates, and develop curricula that are in line with national standards for content, use of animals and humans, and student safety. Currently, registration is not required in exchange for access to the wealth of information freely available through the BEN Portal. Users retain the option to Register and/or Login to join our community of 11,146 biological science educators.
BIODIC : Ultrastructures. Science-Art.com. ARKive : endangered species. Wildscreen's Arkive project was launched in 2003 and grew to become the world's biggest encyclopaedia of life on Earth. With the help of over 7,000 of the world’s best wildlife filmmakers and photographers, conservationists and scientists, Arkive.org featured multi-media fact-files for more than 16,000 endangered species. Freely accessible to everyone, over half a million people every month, from over 200 countries, used Arkive to learn and discover the wonders of the natural world. Since 2013 Wildscreen was unable to raise sufficient funds from trusts, foundations, corporates and individual donors to support the year-round costs of keeping Arkive online. Therefore, the charity had been using its reserves to keep the project online and was unable to fund any dedicated staff to maintain Arkive, let alone future-proof it, for over half a decade.

Molecules is an application for the iPhone, iPod touch, and now iPad that allows you to view three-dimensional renderings of molecules and manipulate them using your fingers.
You can rotate the molecules by moving your finger across the display, zoom in or out by using two-finger pinch gestures, or pan the molecule by moving two fingers across the screen at once. The combination of the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad's unique multitouch input system and the built-in OpenGL ES 3-D graphics capabilities enable you to feel like you are manipulating the molecules themselves with your fingers. New molecules can be downloaded from the RCSB Protein Data Bank ( an international repository of biological molecules and their 3-D structures, or NCBI's PubChem, a public database of compounds.

Image data is the core component for the Virtual Microscope. Below you will find links to each of the samples we have collected and constructed so far. They are arranged by source instrument. In order to view these specimens, you will need to download the Virtual Microscope if you haven't already. For an example of multiple focus levels you can try this housefly sample. In the latest versions of the Virtual Microscope software we built-in the ability to download samples directly to the right place, eliminating a lot of confusion and trouble.
