The Atheist Cosmological Argument – The Orthosphere. I said the other day in passing that, “…theism is not unverifiable.
Its contradiction is incoherent, so it must be true. Just why that’s so is a topic for another post.” This is that post. In contrast to lie or error, truth is usually understood as an idea that corresponds to reality (or the quality of such an idea), and the existence and accessibility of truth is taken for granted.
But the gap between common sense and “critical thinking” concerning truth is very wide. Modern philosophers have explored the obstacles that prevent us from achieving certain, objective, and universal knowledge of reality and concluded that the assumptions of common sense are highly questionable. So is truth done away with? Not at all—but one has to be extremely careful to avoid the traps.
To express ideas, we need words, and the meaning of words is far from static. The most serious problem relates to correspondence. Consent. The human person and intuition of being. For the same reason, if you take him for a jog in front of United Center in Chicago he won’t relate to the statue of Michael Jordan as historical, since we can’t see something as real or historical without being able to set it apart from the fictional or symbolic. This is the first possible meaning of an intuition of being, i.e. to relate to the world as real in a way opposite to the false, fictional, counterfactual, non-existent etc.. This Humean claim, which is axiomatic among philosophers of science and at least a few philosophers of time (cf. Brody, Smolin, Unger), is one I’ve found bewildering since grad school. Below I present an excerpt from a draft of my commentary on Summa Theologiae Ia q. 2 a. 3, in which I lay the groundwork for an argument constructed along the lines of St. Thomas's "Fourth Way". 1.23.16. -If reason gives us only probable truths about the world, we can interpret our desire for certitude as a desire for revelation from one “who can neither deceive nor be deceived.”
–Arguendo, take the most tendentiously antagonistic account of faith as true: belief without evidence. Don’t I want it even under that description? Not being an ideal mind, evidence is usually something I can be deceived about. What if I want a more robust belief than that? Incompleteness Arguments. Megill and Linford have a very puzzling post up at "Philosophical Percolations", looking at theistic incompleteness arguments.
By a theistic incompleteness argument, they mean an argument against atheistic naturalism (AN) of something like the following form: (1) Humans have some property P; but (2) If AN is true, then humans could not have property P (because, e.g., such a property could not exist given AN); therefore, (3) AN is false. Their argument is that these arguments cannot ever succeed. This would actually be quite significant, since, as can be seen on reading through their argument, the argument that theistic incompleteness arguments cannot succeed would be quite easily generalizable to any kind of incompleteness argument.
