From a distance it’s very hard to tell what these soft looking sculptures are actually made of… only when you step close do you realize the large pink and white walls are actually made of thousands of drinking straws. Created by Korean artist Sang Sik Hong, each piece uses thousands of the commonly disposed items to create huge hands, lips and eyes emerging from flat walls. His works, represented by Patrajdas Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, contrast the delicate nature of his strange medium with his choice to represent subjects of sex and power with them.

He says: “Although every one desires power, only a few of people can have it. Power is the symbol of strength and the object for one’s wish since it accompanies many interests. Power is strong, scarce and heading toward eternity. However, the straw, contrary to the properties of power, is a weak structure, easily available to anyone for it is produced on a large scale and a disposable material.” Sang Sik Hong at work on “Hand” Unbelievable Oil Paintings by Fulvio di Piazza. Artist Rashad Alakbarov from Azerbaijan uses suspended translucent objects and other found materials to create light and shadow paintings on walls. The best part is that you can easily create something similar at home – all you need is one or two lamps and some items from your desk. The stunning light painting below, made with an array of colored airplanes has found its way to exhibitions like the Fly to Baku at De Pury Gallery in London.

Rashad adds, “Above the cloud with its shadow is the star with its light. Above all things reverence thyself.” Comments comments. Victor Wang's Paintings.
